UPDATED: Wedding, big event or book launch coming up? Get your skin TIP. TOP.
In the lead up to a book launch, when there are generally a rash (it’s okay - non-contagious) of photo shoots and appearances on the telly and so on, I perform a very simple, very effective maneuver to ensure my skin is a rude shade of health for said shoots and appearances. I book in for Omnilux.
Yaz and I have banged on about this magical LED light machine previously - telling you guys how marvelous your skin looks after even just one session of lying under its SUPERSONIC, MEGA powerful lamps. But for the best effects, for enduring, get-lots-of-compliments-every-day-on-your-skin, you would ideally undertake a program of Omnilux sessions, combined with a few facials and light peels. Complement with good skin care at home and shazam, your skin has the best chance it has to look real good, real quick.
Like, stupid good. Like this:

What the Omnilux does, in a very small nutshell, (and while there are a few settings, I go for the red light - makes me feel happy and I see instant effects) is send light waves deep down into your skin, to recharge your skin cells. Think of it like your mobile phone battery being on one bar, and when you try to take a photo it says ‘Battery Too Low For This Application’ and then it being boosted to full juice, and everything is running perfectly again. For your skin cells, this means they will start producing collagen and elastin again, which is why your skin looks so bouncy and plump after Omnilux - it’s full of the good stuff. (I find it especially awesome for dark circles - gets that circulation going. It doesn’t need to sit on the dark circles - it’s a happy side-effect from the skin cells kicking into sixth gear.)
Anyway. Whenever I’m asked by brides-to-be what they should be doing for their skin so they light up the reception on their Day of Days with their luminous skin, I look them dead in the eye and I say, “Duh. Take up smoking, lay in the sun and drink six cans of Diet Coke every day.” HAHA! As if! We all know just one can of Diet Coke a day can take the sheen from your skin!
No. What I say is: Five weeks out from The Day, go to to spauniverse.com.au and find a salon near you with an Omnilux machine. (I believe most of the Ella Rouge salons have them.) Then, get a consultation from a therapist, work out your current skin condition and get onto a program. Two sessions of the light a week, (they cost around $90) one with a gentle peel beforehand and a lovely hydrating mask after, will get your skin looking shit hot.
Or, and this is VERY EXCITING, you could buy a baby Omnilux, a wee little hand-held one, and do it yourself at home. It’s called the Omnilux new-U and OMG, they weren’t kidding when they called it that. It will make old-U a new-U.
Here’s what it looks like (with its three different light variations being shown.) It plugs into the wall, you choose your setting, and BANG! The light is so intense that Meowbert prefers to leave the room. My apartment probably looks like I’m making homemade bombs.
I’ve been using the new-U for weeks, interspersed with my weekly salon Omnilux light and man, I can’t believe I’ve gone this long without this little guy. And all I do is cleanse my mug, and lie on the lounge with my little ‘solarium’ goggles and press the light onto my skin for 20 mins in each area. My skin looks incredibly healthy and happy. I LOVE LAMP. People LOVE THE LAMP. All the beauty editors love lamp. Lamp is one of those brilliant skin care innovations that reminds me how much we have to look forward to in the future, skin rejuvenation wise. And it’s NON-INVASIVE! That’s the happiest part of all.
There are two versions: the new-U with the Revive/red and the ultra (invisible, stronger) Plus light combination, or the clear-U, which is for those with blemished/acne skin, and has a Revive/red and blue light combination. I have the new-U.
Let’s quickly go over the different heads on the Omnilux, actually:
Omnilux Revive (red) head: Treats fine lines and wrinkles, improves elasticity, skin tone and texture. I find it to brighten my skin too, although that’s not one of its official ‘qualities.’ Studies have shown a 74% improvement in fine lines and wrinkles 84% improvement in skin smoothness and clarity. Them some big numbers.
Omnilux Blue light: Excellent for acne because it neutralises the bacterial infection and with no bacteria, acne inflammation and redness subsides. (There are now several studies that show that LEDs using blue light alone or in combination with red light can successfully treat rosacea.)
Omnilux Plus (infra-red): Better for more mature skin, this head is used alongside Revive (red) head for deep skin rejuvenation, and works real good on deeper lines and wrinkles. (I don’t use this head, just the red - I prefer the immediate effects, and also, I don’t have deep wrinkles yet.)
It’s targeted to and particularly good on the lines around your eyes (ESPECIALLY expression lines - it plumps them up) so I generally hold it for 20 on each cheekbone, then maybe on the forehead too if I have time (or don’t fall asleep.) The one downside is you can only use it once every 48 hour period. I’d tape this little guy to my face every morning and night and go about my business if I could. Important note: There are no UV rays or infra-red with the Revice/red lamp, or anything that can possibly burn or injure your skin. It’s just light.
Here are some before and afters - note how they focus around the crinkly eye area:

I’ve had a series of friends come over under the guise of ‘tea’ only to suggest they maybe “grab some light’ while they’re over. I’m not stupid. I know what they’re up to. And I tell them to buy their own. WORTH IT. Especially now: It retails for $690 (you can buy it from David Jones) but at the moment at participating stockists, if you buy this little wonder light, you get an MD Formulations skincare kit worth $200. Which is obviously near Rad Beyond Belief on the Universal Radness-o-Meter. Go to spa universe or see their little book, Beauty Insider within the spa universe website for more details.
Love LED light technology. Love how it makes my skin look. Love being able to have a concrete answer and solution for women who want to see visible improvement to their skin within a few weeks. Loved my coffee this morning. And the flirty barista who dished it up.
Have you seen or tried Omnilux?
Will you?
Can I answer any questions you may have?
Are you a little bit jealous of my hand held Omnilux?
I would be. It’s awesome.

So it’s fantastic for dark circles - how do you do them without blinding yourself?

Let there be light!!!
This one’s going straight to the top of my Christmas list. I can just imagine my BF’s face as I tell him I’d like a red/ultra New-U.

I have an Omnilux Clear-U, it took hours (I did my whole face) over 4 weeks, but it pretty much completely cleared my moderate acne. I love it, now I just use the red light to pep up my skin a couple of times a week. Zoe, is the red light on the Clear-U good for lines, rejuvenation etc?

I am extremely jealous! Although you may have the Feds busting down your door one night to investigate your alleged bomb making den...but just give them a shot of light & send them on their way! One question-the blue Omnilux -how does that fight congestion?
