How To: Sandra Bullock’s Masterful Proposal Ponytail.

- How To
There’s something lovable about lil Sandy Bullock, isn’t there. I think she’s very attractive, but I also think she’s very funny, (ever seen her doing interviews on the red carpet?) and quite a good actress, making her what we in the biz call a “triple threat.” But, then, I know people who think she’s dull and always plays the same character. And I also know some people who find her so ‘meh’ that they are entirely indifferent to her, and in fact, if they were to read this intro, would have already stopped by now, which means I can write offensive things about them, like the fact they never clean their ear wax and it’s really off, but they would never know I said that about them, such is the power of Sandra’s middle-of-the-roadness.
Anyway. She has a new movie out with the suddenly SUPER, GIGA HOT Ryan Reynolds***, called The Proposal. Which means, like our friends Megan and Isabel, she’s all over the red carpet like white on rice. But I can’t get past her Superb Ponytail in the film poster. There’s a billboard right near my house and I commend the ponytail each time I walk past. Sure, it’s pretty simple, may not look like a big deal, but have you ever tried to do this kind of ponytail and get it right? Very hard. Achieving the perfect texture, part and height of pony is an incredibly underrated art, and one which I pull off roughly once a year. (Poh from Masterchef nailed it perfectly.)
Here she is showing off the Perfect Tight Ponytail.

And here’s how you can do it.
1. Apply a soft, body-building mousse, like ghd Maximise Mousse, throughout your entire hair, roots to tip. Blow dry hair semi-straight, ensuring you flip your head upside down for a minute or two as you do so for more volume.
2. Apply a heat protect spray all over and let dry.
3. Get your styler out and straighten the hair around the crown area - all around the face, basically. This is so when you pull the hair back, you’ve no cowlicks or curls or waves. Keep the lengths of the hair and the back of the head more bouncy, as the danger of over-straightening the whole head means your ponytail will be lank. No good.
4. Apply a texturiser spray, like KMS sea salt spray, lightly all over the hair and BLAST your hair with your blow dryer on high heat for about 30 seconds or so. This will give great texture and boost the body around the roots.
5. Part the hair in the centre. It’s ALL in the centre part - it makes a BIG difference to the shape your ponytail gives your face as it opens it up, and places the focus on your eyes. Also good: It hides cowlicks and gives you two distinct little ‘paths’ to slick back any hairline fuzzies, as opposed to just slicking them back and hoping for the best.
6. Pull back the rest of your hair into a ponytail. I suggest using the Hair Bungee to secure you ponytail? It is this odd little baby Occy strap, a piece of elastic with two hook ends, and you simply dig in a hook to your hair, and then wrap the other end around and hook it wherever it ends. It’s genius, means you get the perfect, SUPER tight ponytail finish and is a massive, massive backstage favourite of hair stylists. Here’s how to do it and some more information. I have two, and they’ve made a yuge difference to my ponytail creation process. (Especially since I have huge boofy curls in real life that move and need a very very specific breed of elastic length/tension.)

7. Take your irons and run them through the pony, curling them up at the end for movement. Or go straight. Up to you.
8. Take an old toothbrush and spray with hairspray and tame any hairline fuzzies. Pull your ponytail a little tighter.
9. Marvel at your exceptional ponytail. (And free facelift.)

I have curly hair too. My little trick is to leave it curly, like, don’t even flat iron the front, and still pull it back with a centre part as per above. The curl gives some volume and texture. Then I do a little top-knot-with-pulled-out-bits on top of my noggin. Real SJP style. Try it!

Any tips for curly hair? I love a straight ponytail but if I follow all these tips and don’t iron the ends it will be a frizzy mess :(

So inspired, I’ve just done my own version. Hair was already blow-dried from this morning, but the wind got to it & I had no hair elastics, so I used a piece of hair to tie it around the ponytail and secured the same with bobbypins underneath.

YES!!! I covet her ponytail every time I see it! Largely cos I can never, ever get a pony to look good/not give me a headache, so I’m rather envious.

Oh and laurenb, yep, sure is do-able on shoulder-length. Just keep the ponytail a little lower. Maybe even bun it. Bun time. Bun on.

OMG does that Hair Bungee actually work? If so I HAVE to get me one, I can never find hair elastics that go around the right number of times to hold my hair up.

Oh god, I hope that was just a skit. It would be so wrong if it is for real.

Is that kind of ponytail do-able on shoulder length hair?
I agree that getting a pony to look hot and not meh is a challenge.
Also agree that Ryan Reynolds is sex on legs. (well in the case of that photo, sex on a torso).
