Review given, opinion sought: Purifying lotions for the occasional pimple

I don’t get many pimples, but when I do, they’re aggressive little punks, and I generally wish for them to not exist, immediately. And the first thing I do, should one come up? Reach for the purifying lotion.

Disclaimer: I can’t really advocate the products below as being appropriate for acne or full on break outs, because I’ve never used them in that fashion. They do, however, work exCEPtionally well if you get a few little pimples on your chin and cheeks every now and then.

The reason I love these two products is because both are gentle, both really work and neither will dry your skin out and make it flake off for seven days after using them. In all: Epic skincare win.

The first is Gernétic Sebo-Ger purifying lotion. A cult anti-blemish lotion, Sebo-Ger is a strange smelling, funny little lotion that my dear facialist, Natasha put me onto several million years ago. It’s got nothing, nothing that could cause any kind of inflammation in it, as this gorgeous, obscure French salon brand is focused on nourishment and nurture and nature, as opposed to fast, ouchy results and strong peels etc. I simply wipe some over the offending spots with a cotton pad and let it dry. (Usually I follow with a clay-based pimple-draw-er-out-er-er, but that’s for another time. And plus, I reckon these purifying lotions can usually handle the job alone.) The spot dries out, and your skin is still happy and hydrated. Superb. Also: This bottle will last you A LONG time.

I will admit it’s a little bit difficult to find, but here is a link to the Australian stockists. (If you’ve ever tried Gernétic, holler. Love to know just how obscure it is.)

I would post an image of the bottle (white, quite plain) but the only one I can find is only suitable for those with the enhanced vision of a supervillain. Mi scusi.

The second is Garnier’s Pure Pore Purifying Astringent, $8.85 which has a small dose of that famous pimple-beater, salycilic acid but is still lovely and gentle (provided you only use it maybe twice a day) and is EXCELLENT value. I keep this stuff at work in case a spot comes up mid-way through the day - I can begin drying it out gently, effectively, immediately. (What, are you suggesting the editor of a beauty site can have a pimple? Juice the truth, you naughty orange! You know that’s not possible!)

Here it is, here:

(If you have more than just the occasional spot, maybe go for the newer, stronger Pure Active Pimple Reducing Toner instead, $9.15, which has more salicylic acid and works on toning down the anger of the pimple, and takes care of the redness and markings that you’re left with after the whitehead has racked off and everything has calmed down in skin town. )

Bonus Product Use!!!! Both of these products are also excellent for ingrown hair treatment, or to prevent such things after a wax. Amazing and at NO EXTRA COST!!!!

Do you use purifying lotions?
Find them more effective than pimple gels?

I recently bought a 50ml tub of Synchro (the cornerstone product of the Gernetic range) for $120. Not cheap, but a little goes a long way. This should last about 8-9 months, so not so bad on a price-per-wear basis.

I break out viciously at the slightest opportunity, but I truly do love Paula’s Choice BHA gel. It’s gentle and effective and I could not be without it.

I find nothing beats a dab of tea tree oil. I just pop in on at night and in the morning the spot has usually gone.

How much are the Gernetic products in general? I’m currently using Cosmidex - which I love - but is so expensive! I’m a little scared to change tho, coz my skin loves Cosmidex

I find that Jurlique Blemish Cream works too.  And a skin techician put me on to Hydrogen Peroxide for overnight success on particularly nasty spots.  Cheap, cheerful and works a treat.

Girl I know loves genetic too! Her facialist in double bay sells it. She used to use MD formulations but now swears by genetic.

So excited to see a review of a Gernetic product! I use and LOVE their products but so few people seem to know about them. I thought it was a special secret between me and my salon ;)

Oooh, yes. Alpha-H has some outstanding anti-blemish offerings. That liquid gold couldn’t more appropriately named. Excellent for blemishes, but also dull skin needing glow. (Strong, but. And using it demands lots of sunscreen every day.)
