Jennifer Lopez is getting back to who she really is.

Which I am thrilled about. I mean, this is a woman who defined a whole era of beauty (that era being the Paleolithic. No, wait - the early 2000s) and a beauty role model who was actually a Big Influence on how I do my makeup, or at least how I hope for it to look, or at the very least, how I like her to look.

As a beauty editor, when you think of Miss JENNIFER LOPEZ, you immediately start filing her into: glowing skin, brown smokey eyes and that Perfect Nude Lip. (You may also ask your editorial coordinator to file her under high ponytails and hair pieces, caramel highlights, centre-parts and hoop earrings, but it depends how busy they are.) Or, more accurately and more importantly, when you think of those trends and looks, you think of Miss JENNIFER LOPEZ first. She owned that shit, yknow? She was all over it like white on rice.

Even though this was her signature look, say 4-5 years ago (the Jenny From The Block, era) we still reference her as that because she did it SO STINKIN’ WELL. She did! She was always so tonal, so many variations of caramel and taupe and latte and chocolate and bronze, all smooshed into a big Latino blender and poured out beautifully all over her hair and skin. I loved this look. Tried to emulate it often. With varied outcomes.

And then J.LO fired her hair and makeup artist and went a bit loco. (The beehive and strange eyeliner, era). But it would appear (and with a new film nibbling at her heels) that she has discovered that she had a look, and it really, really worked, and sometimes, (as CINDY CRAWFORD and co demonstrate) you should just be honest about what suits you, and do it some more.

Which, judging by her latest red carpet appearances, Miss LOPEZ is definitely doing. Here she is (possibly wondering where her homeboy P.DIDDY is) at a Miami Dolphins game earlier this week doing her traditional, high, (I think hair piece injected) pony with ritzy hoop earrings and a bronzed-dewy-skin-and-a-smoky-eye-with-a-nude-lip. Very ghetto glam. (Not necessarily an oxymoron.)

See? That photo could have been from October 2002!

(This woman does not age. She looks exactly the same. As the old guy off the Cadbury’s add used to say: Why is this so?)

And here she is at the premiere of This Is It mincing away in a blend of high fashion backcombing and smoldering eyes with false lashes and yes, more hoops. (Try not to notice the hair - it was a VERY windy premiere and 98% of the shots are of Miss LOPEZ holding her hair down or trying to smooth it down.)

Do you see what I mean? I feel like we’ve seen all of this from her before, but rather than that boring me, or cloaking her in a veil of unimaginativeness or nostalgia for a time when she told us her love didn’t come for free and Mr. BEN AFFLECK featured in her film clips, I think it’s a really great thing. Sometimes, you should just stick with what looks really really great on you.

Do you agree?
Do you like Miss LOPEZ’s return to her signature look?
Will you be dusting off those hoops anytime soon?

I totally agree that this is her best look.  I think everyone looks best when they find what works for them.. the only challenge is finding out what works for yourself… I have tried everything… and I always end up boring and neutral.

Was looking at a pic of her the other day, going “How does that woman mix ghetto and glam so darn well?” She looks sexy and tough but never OTT or trashy.

Jen is such a good example of someone who gets it right all the time. Even in the ‘off’ period, I still kinda appreciated the effort into the beehive.
Her eye makeup is stunning in that second shot. wow.

Damn those Santa Ana winds!!!  Love my hoops, got a massive collection. Apparently it’s my signature look, the silver sparkly hoop of shapes and sizes. I make sure they’re not too heavy & stretch my lobes, the only mistake JLo has made but possibly because hers are solid white gold worth 10’s-o-thousands and mine are 50 bucks from Designa Elegance in Baulkham Hills!!!

I love that her hair is moving in the second shot. That’s what happens when real people go outside, and it works quite well with her deconstructed coif.

I admire women who know what looks good on them and stick to it.  I think Jennifer Aniston is another great example.
