If Celebrities Ruled the Earth

Updated: An interview with Miranda Kerr.

In the moments preceding interviewing a celebrity who’s launching a fragrance, a skincare line or makeup range, there is some part of you inside that groans a little bit, because you know that generally they will be frustratingly media-trained, only want to talk about what they want to talk about, and should you veer off topic, or question/challenge them in the slightest on something they are promoting, you will find yourself in a conversational cul-de-sac, fumbling for reverse.

Miss MIRANDA KERR bucked this stereotype with the fury of a champion rodeo rider. She was incredibly knowledgeable, passionate and personable, and three seconds after hanging up from speaking with her, I emailed the KORA PR and asked if she might please send over the eye gel, because Ms KERR had sold it in so well.

We spoke for some time, Miss KERR but for the sake of brevity, I will keep the interview succinct. Well, as succinct as I am capable of. (Not very.) Here’s kind of how it went.

Miss KERR, congratulations on this, your first skincare line. I understand it is made from 95 percent organic, (eco certified compliant) and five per cent from completely natural ingredients, which was a clever move on many levels, not least of all because the organic and natural sector of the skincare market is growing at approximately 26 billion per cent year on year. Now, tell me, of this 15-strong line, which are your top three products? And don’t say you can’t choose. I must say your body wash smells and feels delightful and your exfoliating cream was a pleasure to use.

“Isn’t it? It’s so gentle, it really is.”

Also, I think your tinted day cream is bound to become a bit of a hero product.

“Oh, it’s gorgeous isn’t it? I wear it every day… it’s just the perfect coverage and tint… Okay, so first would be the Recovery Eye Gel Treatment, $54.95, which is especially good for travel. I find it hard to find eye gels, it’s usually eye creams everywhere, but I specifically wanted a gel, as I think they’re more refreshing and soothing, and this gel has organic seaweed in it, which is great for stimulating collagen. The Organic Rich Body Lotion, $44.95 has jojoba and cocoa butter and macadamia extracts and it smells amazing, and it’s unisex, so boys can use it too. Whenever I wear it people pick up on the scent and ask me which fragrance I’m wearing. I like that, it’s delicate and gentle but it’s definitely there. Finally, I’d say the Exfoliating Cream, $54.95, I use it three times a week, it’s gentle but it really shifts all the makeup I have to wear for work.”

Who is “noni”, please. She seems to have infiltrated almost every one of your products.

“Noni is a shrub found in Tahiti.”

Oh. I see. ”

“I’ve been drinking noni juice for the last 12 years, my grandparents introduced it to me. I am not the same without it - it does incredible things for my skin and is the first thing I turn to for curing jetlag. I used to soak cotton pads in pure noni juice and use that on my skin, but obviously now with my range using so much noni juice, I don’t need to do that anymore.”

Sold. I’m off to the health food shop as soon as this blog post is done. You are incredibly toned and healthy and zen. Are you like this all the time, or do you ever tuck into a Whopper with cheese?

“I’m 26 and I’m not perfect. I’d be maybe 80% organic and 20% other food. But, I know that if I put the right nutrients in, the body will deliver optimal results. And obviously if you feed the body the right stuff on the inside, you will see it on the outside. It’s the same with skin: if you put the right nutrients into the skin, the skin will respond favorably and look its best.”

You travel, huh. Like, a lot. How do you alight from a plane then look glowy and Miranda Kerr-y later that night or the next morning? I look rank.

“I drink noni juice and lots of water before, during and after the flight, and I try to do some yoga on the plane if I can. I’ll also meditate and listen to Deepak Chopra on my iPod and just focus on my breath… all of this rejuvenates me.”

And what about Red Carpet preparation?

“I really believe in the benefits of an oxygen facial before a red carpet event, or after a long flight. It makes the skin glow and look really plump.”

Now, let’s talk about how the KORA name and that swimming-pool-coloured packaging.

“The name KORA comes from the core of self. The packaging, well, I love the sea and the sky; I’m a big lover of the ocean. Just looking at them instantly makes me feel tranquil, it’s very calming. I wanted to re-create that with the products.”

And those sexy black and white photos? Little bit weird being Johnny No Clothes and knowing your dad’s gonna see it?

“No way! It was my idea. The whole KORA manifesto is about your skin, being natural, embracing it, not being afraid of it. I’m not promoting nudity, but wearing a t-shirt didn’t seem right.”

Weird on set? I mean, all those people....

“I wear a g-string til the last moment… it’s not like I’m runnin’ around naked!”

I love that you dropped your ‘g’ just now. You have such an adorably Australian accent still… Hey, can’t help noticing your hair is getting increasingly darker. Why did you go so blonde recently?

“I don’t know. Dad was right when he said to the papers I was much better as a brunette. But you know, it’s good to be a woman, to play around a bit. But then when I think about how blonde I went, I think, I’m all about being natural, so why even do it?”

You’re one of PRIMPED’s most loved celebrities, Miss KERR. We love to post photos of your hair and makeup. We very much liked your hair and makeup at the MET ball earlier this year. Did you? Which has been your favourite look in recent times?

“Thank you. I’d say… the white dress. The red lips and the white dress. I love old school glamour.”

Oh yeah? Well I love your body wash. And your rosehip oil.

“Oh, the organic rosehip oil! It’s amazing and so nutritious, because it’s not just rosehip oil, it’s got all these essential fatty acids and jasmine and rose and then there are pomegranate oils which are full of antioxidants. I’ve been using rosehip oil for years and it’s so awesome to have my own now. I go through heaps of it.”

It’s like dinner for your skin, isn’t it. A big, healthy, organic dinner.  Many thanks for your time, Miss KERR, all the very best for KORA and any bets you may place for the Melbourne Cup also and keep doing that one-half-of-your-hair-tucked-behind-the-ear business, because it really does suit you and we all think it looks very elegant and alluring.

She is amazing and of course the perfect person to front her own cosmetics line because WHO doesn’t want to look like her?

Is it true she doesn’t drink alcohol? *sigh* (hope not - hoping she does so I can still get away with my wine a night fixation).

Not convinced of the ‘miraculous powers’ of Noni juice (wiki it and make up your own mind - Goji berries v2.0?) but she seems down to earth and I admire her healthy lifestyle mindset.

Think every health food store will sell out of noni juice - maybe time to buy a plantation in Tahiti! Great interview Zoe.
