The spring shows seems to be very much about polar opposites. For every bright cobalt blue ruffled mini or canary yellow swimsuit sashaying down the runway there’ll be a muted beige shift dress and loose-fitting nude jacket. Ditto with the makeup. Nudes, naturals and beige have been overwhelmingly present at both New York and London spring/summer 09 collections. Both in the fashion, and the beauty. (They’re inseparable, those two.) Here we are in London, on our second stop on our “world” wind tour of the Spring/Summer 09. This place has a definite Britishy feel to it.... there are red buses everywhere and we hear the Queen isn’t far from we are now. (Which is definitely England.) The shows kicked off yesterday, with the Brit Kids out in force (Peaches and Pixie Geldof, Alexa Chung et al), some lovely little top knots at PPQ and more confirmation that bright orangey-red lips are, like, really big news. ... more

And did I mention extensions? Lots of extensions. But with the half-up, half-down look (which we also saw at Alexander Wang) it actually looks kinda cool. The rock-n-roll quiff saves the look from being too Cheryl Cole/Pussycat Dolls, and then, just when you think you’ve figured out where the look is going, cue the crazy ethnic earrings! Which changes the look again. We should be confused, but instead we just think, that looks pretty hot. I might like to try that.... more

And for a lot of women, it’s a far more wearable way to wear a red lip than with the traditional, Old Hollywood style way, with velvety, flawless skin and winged liner, ala Dita Von Teese. See, the bronzer takes the intensity of the red lip down, it makes it less harsh and by warming up and giving colour to the face, gives the lip more of a summery feel. Michael Kors sent his models out with a beautiful bronzed face and red lip combination at his Spring 09 show, which was the perfect way to stand out in the midst of so many shows, so many smoky eyes and so many barely-there faces.... more
