Why eye cream is an investment

Like a good little Primper, you know all about the importance of cleansing, toning and moisturising. You also know that it’s vital for you (and your pillowcase) to remove your makeup before hitting the hay. But how much do you know about eye cream? First of all, they differ from regular facial moisturisers, so if you’re dabbing your day cream under your baby blues, you need to stop! The skin under your eyes is delicate and thin and when you squint or laugh your arse off, little fine lines are going to form. And fine lines are not your friends Primpers. Eye creams are specifically formulated to cater for pesky little problems like this so if you (gasp) don’t have one, you need to get yourself to a chemist/cosmetic counter stat. Here’s why:

It combats…fine lines
As we get older, the skin around our eyes loses elasticity and this is when wrinkles and crows feet start to pop up. Annoying huh? Fine lines around the eye area is one of the first signs of ageing so it’s important to start using an eye cream in your late teens or early 20s. Exposure to the sun is the top cause of crows feet and smoking comes a close second, so don your sunnies, quit the habit and pat on the good stuff.

It combats…dark circles
If your mum has dark circles, chances are you will too. And while I’m sure there are other things you’d rather inherit, by slapping on eye cream you can improve the appearance of raccoon eyes so you look well-rested and refreshed. But genetics isn’t the only cause. Lack of sleep emphasizes your circles so make sure you’re nodding off at an appropriate hour. And in rare cases, a vitamin deficiency can cause those purpley bruise-like marks under your eyes.

It combats…dehydration
Got sunken eyes? This is a sign of dehydration so you need to inject some moisture into those puppies pronto. When the skin around your eyes lacks moisture, it thins and becomes itchy and tight. And before you know it, you’re throwing a housewarming party for your new neighbours: fine lines and wrinkles. Gently apply an eye cream to re-hydrate the area, reduce moisture-loss and to leave skin feeling supple. Causes include the over-consumption of caffeine and sugar and drinking alcohol, so go easy on the Caprioska’s.

It combats…puffiness
Whether you’ve balled your eyes out, didn’t sleep well, or you’re ridiculously stressed, I’m guessing you’re faced with eyes so puffy, you look like you walked into a beehive. Good news for you, puffy peepers is a temporary condition where fluid retention is behind the fist fight look you’re sporting. Massaging or tapping an eye cream that targets puffiness can help drain the fluid so your eyes will be back to normal in no time.

Product Pick: QV Face Revitalising Eye Cream, $15.99. This little wonder improves microcirculation around your eyes, reduces puffiness, dark circles and fine lines and increases elasticity. Amazing.
