The Five Get-a-Holiday-Glow Buys That I Never Travel Without

Sun, 23 December 2012 9:00AM

So I just returned from the most amazing holiday. Three weeks in exciting, sun-drenched Vietnam and Cambodia. I like to think I look a little like this …

Teresa Palmer, at a screening of Wish You Were Here, set in Cambodia

There really is no place like South-East Asia. It has an almost electric energy to it. And it’s a place where you can see just about everything: from temples to absurdly gorgeous beaches, from jungles to enormous shopping malls, and everything in between. And another thing it has going for it: it’s very low-maintenance.

For the three weeks, I did what I always do when on holiday: wear no makeup. Not even mascara. At home, going out bare-faced would make me flinch, but on a break I don’t bat an un-made-up eyelid. Particularly in Asia. The women here seem to embrace their natural beauty. If the Vietnamese and Cambodian women were wearing makeup, I didn’t see it. I just saw flawless complexions and shiny hair.

So my mission for my trip was simple: no makeup – and if I could get a little glow in my complexion too, well that would be fantastic.

Luckily, in my time I have mastered the art of minimal packing. I have a handful of products (five to be exact) that I never travel without. The good news: if your wallet is cash-strapped from Christmas shopping, these buys won’t break the bank. Oh, and they all help enhance that holiday glow.

Here’s my checklist …

Sukin Hydrating Mist Toner, $9.95, from pharmacies

When I say it was hot, I’m not exaggerating. I broke a serious sweat within five minutes in the sun, so imagine what I was like after a few hours exploring Angkor temples. There was no better feeling than sitting in a tuk-tuk on return to the hotel, knowing that a ice-cold bottle of this hydrating mist was in the mini-bar fridge. I spritzed my face, neck and décolletage with this godsend of a product, and felt so refreshed for it. This combined with a few litres of water each day equaled hydrated, soft and glowing skin.

Garnier Fructis Colour Last Nourishing Fortifying Mask, $7.95, from pharmacies and supermarkets

The sun is not your hair’s friend. Nor is chlorine. I was quite naughty on my trip and rarely wore a hat (yeah, yeah, I should know better). Nor did I rinse my hair straight after swimming (no, seriously, I really should know better). But we’re all a little lazy on holiday, right? Fortunately I had my trusty Garnier hair mask with me. My hairdresser is constantly trying to get me onto salon products, but truthfully, nothing has ever made my hair feel smoother, shinier, more manageable or healthier than this hair treatment.

OPI Nail Lacquer in Big Apple Red, $19.95, 1800 358 999

While in Asia I took advantage of how darn cheap manicures are and I took along my favourite polish. Honestly, is there a more fun shade of red than this one? It’s such a cheerful tomato hue and it made me feel like a million dollars, even when I was covered in head-to-toe red dirt after a long quad-bike ride through Siem Reap.

Neutrogena Ultimate Sport Sunscreen Spray SPF 30+, $17.95, from pharmacies

Remember what I said about getting sweaty? I wasn’t kidding. A regular sunscreen would have slid straight off my face, so I knew I had to call in the big guns. This is one of the best sunscreens I have ever used. It’s not greasy, plus it has amazing sweat-proof staying-power, which has made it my go-to sunscreen whenever I get active outside.

Olive by Langlois Lipbalm in Strawberry, $7.95, Olive by Langlois

And when it’s hot, your lips can get dry. No fun, right? This lovely balm smooths and nourishes my pout, and it smells yum. Also, it’s all-natural, being packed with good stuff like olive oil and vitamin A. How can you say no to that?

Tell me, Primpers, what are your holiday essentials?

Do you go au naturel, too – or do you maintain your beauty regimen no matter what?

I always maintain my beauty regime during the holidays! Infact I take the extra time to pamper myself with face masks and regular exfoliation and nail colour changes.
Love the OPI big apple red colour its fun and gorgeous!

I always use my full regime too!
When somethings working I dont want to wreck more havoc on my skin than the change in environment can do.
The only thing I mainly do is wear less make-up, more TM than full foundation.
Dont want to look back at happy snaps and look to un-kept lol

That Sukin spray toner is one of my faves. I really like Avene’s thermal water spray too. I go very low-maintenance while away on holidays. Especially when it’s a tropical climate. Last time I went away (Phuket) I packed Lanolips, a couple of eyeliners and a powder foundation. That was all the makeup I wore. :)

wow you did well for not wearing make up for three weeks, it would feel so strange but its good to give your skin a rest.
I love the products youve chosen above. Its important to keep your hair and skin hydrated when travelling, your skin goes funny when its in a different atmosphere that tis used to.

I find that my skin is at its best when I’m in Asia. So the not wearing makeup thing is easy.. Hydration is the key! @somuchpretty I love the avene thermal water, sooooo nice!

I love the Neutrogena sunscreen, the spray is terrific & it’s so easy & mess free to pop in my bag.

My essentials are a good BB cream, waterproof mascara & good lip balm with SPF
