Sunscreens that won’t give you a face full of pimples

Look, you should be wearing face sunscreen every day. But I’ll forgive you if through winter you opted for an SPF foundation instead. It’s summer now though (literally to the day) and I expect you to put your big girl pants on and purchase a proper face sunscreen of at least 30+, OK? Sun damage doesn’t just lead to potential skin cancer (although that alone is a good enough reason to slip/slop/slap), it also prematurely ages you with fine lines and pigmentation.

But let’s talk about a major reason people don’t use face sunscreen. BREAKOUTS. Yep, sunscreen has a bad rap for causing pimple explosions, so loads of people refuse to touch the stuff for this reason. But it’s all a lie, guys! I mean it’s not, some will make you breakout – but there’s 100% sunscreens on the market that will keep your skin clear while protecting you from pesky rays.

I personally don’t get breakouts (don’t get mad, I have a myriad of other skin problems instead, like chronic dryness and eczema! Yay!) but my sister does, and I enlisted her advice for this feature because it’s my personal belief that the best recommendations come from people who actually deal with the problem, not someone with no breakouts ever. Right? So here are her top picks, from experience.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Fluid

La Roche Posay Anthelios XL SPF 50+ Ultra Light Fluid, $28.99

This stuff is LIGHT. Like they’re not messing around with that ‘ultra light’ tag – it feels like nothing once it’s on and is so, so spreadable. Obviously it’s non-comedogenic (by the way, that’s a big thing to look for when finding a product that won’t block pores and cause breakouts), but it’s also got loads of other good tags – fragrance free, paraben free, suitable for sensitive skin… this is a real all rounder when it comes to skin types, so it’s perfect for acne sufferers who often deal with both breakouts AND skin sensitivity.

Dermalogica Oil Free Matte

Dermalogica Oil Free Matte SPF 30, $70

This is one for the oily skinned gals out there – Dermalogica’s oil free matte isn’t just going to protect you from the sun, it’s also going to keep you shine-free, and help to regulate oil production in general. The matte finish makes it perfect for under makeup, too.

Aspect Envirostat Dry Touch

Aspect Envirostat SPF 50, $26

This water and sweat resistant sunscreen is surprisingly light given it’s super protective levels and all that resisting it does. It’s dry to the touch once you apply, so you won’t feel greasy – and there’s even Vitamin E and Aloe Vera for soothing hot summer skin.

Skinceuticals Ultimate UV Defense

Skinceuticals Ultimate UV Defense SPF 30, $69

This sunscreen is all about being kind to all skin types. It’s PABA free, oil free and fragrance free – so it won’t just prevent breakouts but also won’t irritate. It’s also designed to be nourishing in dry climates, so unless you have really dry skin it kind of doubles as a moisturiser too. Bonus!

Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face

Mecca Cosmetica To Save Face SPF 30+ Face Sunscreen, $38

The reviews on this face sunscreen say it all – a 4.5 rating on Mecca’s website based on 128 reviewers, with people saying things like “it does not give a white cast, even with flash photography”, and I’ve never used a sunscreen before that actually makes your skin makeup go on BETTER” indicating this is some pretty amazing stuff. It’s lightweight, non-greasy and contains hyaluronic acid and vitamin E for hydration.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Clear Face Sunscreen

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Clear Face SPF 30, $16.99

Designed specifically for breakout prone skin types, this oil free formula has a weightless feel so it’s perfect for daily use.
