Best of Beauty 2012: The Biggest Breakthrough Buys of the Year

Thu, 13 December 2012 4:08PM

As we prepare to farewell another year, it’s always interesting to take a look back through the big events that have shaped the last 12 months. And this one’s been a doozy: The Olympics, the US election, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the reported discovery of the Higgs Boson particle, a man jumping out of a helium balloon becoming the first person to break the sound barrier… And then some.

It’s also been a pretty big year in beauty as you’d know, Primpers. Sure, no one did a space dive or ran 100 metres in 9.63 seconds, but there have been some pretty exciting developments for the old makeup bag, too.

These have been my favourite innovations in 2012 …

BB cream
OK, so it’s not new. But 2012 was certainly the BB’s year. Emerging as a niche buy loved by beauty addicts in Asia, this year the do-it-all skin perfector took the world by storm. Brands big and small launched their own versions, from budget to big bucks, and we all fell in love. What did we do before BB’s total world domination? Used a moisuriser, and a sunscreen, and a primer, and a foundation. That’s what. So 2011. A special shout-out goes to Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector, $13.95, Priceline, for being one of the first (and best-value) to market, leading the global charge.

Long-lasting glossy lips
One of beauty’s holy grails, year after year cosmetic companies churn out lip lacquers that promise to stay put for longer than, well, 32 seconds. Up until now, most have been double-ended wands that separate colour and shine. And mostly, they feel drying and the gloss layer requires constant top-ups. Which is why two new products have taken my fancy this year. First, Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain, $50, which uses brand-new technology to make the highly-pigmented shine stay put. And second, Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain, $17.95, which offers vibrant, dewy colour in an oh-so-handy crayon. Both genius inventions in my book.

Split-end solutions
If you style and colour your hair a lot, or you’re one to skimp on regular trims, you’ll know how boring split ends can be. Not only do they increase tangles and make your hair look and feel dry and damaged, they’re virtually unfixable unless you chop them off. Until now. TRESemmé’s wonder range, Split Remedy, relies on positively charged particles to virtually zip up frayed ends, binding them together. Initially, the solution is temporary, but the brand claims that up to 80 per cent of your split ends can be repaired in three washes. With prolonged use, new splits will stop happening so your style will look blunter and fresher for longer. Great news for those growing out that bob. My pick of the bunch? The Split Remedy Leave-In Conditioning Spray, $11.49, Priceline.

Invisible foundation
As the caked-on look is so last season, there’s been a mad scramble to invent a traceless base that makes your skin look just like your skin, but, well, flawless. Winning the race so far in my opinion is the new Estée Lauder Invisible Fluid Makeup, $68, department stores. The foundation’s patent-pending pigment technology works to match the undertones of individual complexions, weaving a veil over the top that perfects and conceals yet somehow remains translucent. But forget the science – it just makes you look like you have really great skin, in a fresh faced way (rather than a packed-it-on-with-a-trowel kind of way).

The tail enders… If those innovations weren’t quite enough, to cap off the year two new launches have the beauty world abuzz. Just scraping into the running are these big-news buys:

SPF 50
Finally! Our protection from the harsh Australian sun just got a bit of a boost thanks to the introduction of SPF50 sunscreens. And while it’s exciting that we’re now up there with the rest of the world in the numbers game, it’s important to remember that, in reality you’re only getting a little more protection – 1.3% more than SPF30 to be exact. However, these new formulas also offer increased UVA protection against those cancer-causing rays, so the combination is certainly worth the investment. One to try: La Roche-Posay Anthélios, 50+, $24.95, from selected pharmacies.

Hair thickener
If you’ve got thin hair, raise your hand. Right. Everyone with their hand in the air, take note: launching this month is the Aveda Invati range. Already making a pretty big splash overseas, this savvy collection of three products has been formulated to reduce hair loss, boost volume, and address thinning and density. Without harsh chemicals. Using 97% naturally-derived ingredients. Not excited yet? Their trials proved the products stopped up to 33% of hair loss. So clever. The range consists of an Exfoliating Shampoo, $49.95; Thickening Conditioner, $49.94; and the powerhouse Scalp Revitaliser, $89.95, 1800 706 377.

And that, Primpers, is my list of the year’s best beauty breakthroughs.

Have you tested any of them yourself? And what has topped your cosmetic charts this year?

Have you discovered a new beauty love in 2012? I can’t wait to hear what the lucky product is.

Until next week,

Emily x

The only product from the above list that I have tested is the Garnier BB creme, though it is great and has lots of potential I was sadly dissappointed to find that the light shade was not so light, therefore it would be great if they made a couple more shades.

I would love to try the Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain :)
