Aussie Beauty Special 2013: Top 10 True-Blue Beauty Moments
Wed, 23 January 2013 1:09PM
I’m guessing you all know by now we’re getting a little patriotic over here at PRIMPED. What with Aussie Day on the way and all. So far this week, we’ve brainstormed our top Aussie it girls and listed our most-loved icons (along with the beauty lessons to learn from them). And, of course, gone (macadamia) nuts about the best home-grown beauty buys and brands.
This morning saw us pondering our favourite Aussie beauty moments over our vegemite toast. Which got me all inspired for today’s blog. So, without further ado, here’s my timeline of the top ten true-blue beauty moments – those magazine and movie roles that have starred local talent, yet triggered trends the world over.
* Disclaimer. I was slightly obsessed with Olivia Newton John as a wee girl. This could explain why she makes this list not once, not twice, but three times. I could have added more, but Hayley told me to stop and move on.
1978 – Olivia Newton John Stars in Grease
And every second girl is suddenly sporting a perm and skin-tight lycra.
1980 – Olivia Newton John Stars in Xanadu
Okay, so the movie was a flop (although the songs, especially the title number, never fail to make me want to strap on my rollerskates and twirl around a dancefloor). But a whole generation of girls grew up desperate to wear ruffles and ribbons in their hair, not to mention contour their cheekbones and lavish lips in shimmery gloss.
1981 – Olivia Newton John Sings Let’s Get Physical
And makes that generation of beribboned, beruffled girls instantly feel the need to cut their hair, wear sweatbands, and star-jump their way around an aerobics room.
Don’t know what I’m talking about? Stop everything and watch this ’80s wonder at once:
1986 – Elle Does Elle
Elle Macpherson became synonymous with Elle magazine in this decade, starring on a slew of its covers, and in turn became our first fully-fledged supermodel.
1998 – Cate Blanchett Stars in Elizabeth
Cate got an Oscars nomination for her turn as the Virgin Queen, and totally won over a legion of beauty fans, who swooned over her pale, porcelain-like skin.
You can pretty much trace our current obsession with skin brighteners and lighteners back to this moment in time. No wonder SK-II signed her up as an amabassador in 2004 (and then global ambassador in 2007).
