Matte vs Shimmer Bronzer. Kate Mara & Kate Upton Take Sides

Fri, 18 January 2013 1:20PM

We love us a bronzer here at PRIMPED. You might have watched Yaz’s video earlier this week, where she listed her favourite five.

You might also know that Yaz has one of the most enviable glows around. I’m forever begging her for her secrets. Her top one is a crazy-healthy superfood-rich diet. But bronzer is up there, too.

That’s because bronzers are ideal for instantly imbuing the face with all-over glow. You simply whisk them over the parts the sun would naturally hit – the forehead, bridge of nose, cheeks, chin – with a big, fluffy brush. Suddenly, you look as though you’ve just jetted in from some glamorous island jaunt.

Great to know if you’re wondering what is the best – and easiest – way to match your fake-tanned body to your face.

While most bronzers – which have a subtle scattering of shimmer throughout – are meant to give a natural-look, oh-I-wake-up-like-this healthy glow, there’s another way to wear bronzer, and that’s to seriously sculpt your cheekbones.

And there are two ways to do this. And this is where either a very matte or very shimmery bronzer comes into the picture.

So which is best for you?

Arguing the case for shimmer bronzer is Kate Mara.

As Kate so helpfully shows, you want to apply your shimmer bronzer right where the light will hit. Of course, we don’t all have paparazzi flashes going off in our face, as Kate does. But even sunlight or candlelight (for those of you planning a romantic tête-à-tête anytime soon) will work to bring out your cheekbones a little.

So what you do is take a fluffy blush brush, and smile to make your apples pop. Now, place your brush head at the top of the apples, a tad to the side. From here, whisk it back along the upper cheekbones, towards your temples. Make sure to really blend it all with your brush to soften any hard edges.

The reasons you don’t place the shimmer smack-bang on the apples are that 1) this can make you look a little disco-ball, and 2) this leaves you the option of flushing the actual apples with a rosy blush, as Kate has done here. Although if you have skin that already has a naturally warm or dark tone to it, you might not want or need any blush at all.

PS – for those of you not wanting to fiddle around with brushes, there’s an easy alternative: use an illuminating cream, and simply dab on and blend out with your fingertips.

Buy: ModelCo Glow Summer Bronze, $58, Priceline and David Jones; for a cream version, check out Face of Australia Illuminator in Angel Glow, $14.95, pharmacies.

Now, in the corner fighting it out for matte bronzer is the luscious Kate Upton.

This is quite the edgy look so we’re not surprised that Kate – who’s been getting all fashiony with her beauty look lately – has gone for this style of bronzer. Because this is all about contouring. A pro technique that is never for the fainthearted. Altough it can be worth the effort because when done well, it’s like a visual face-lift, carving definition into cheeks and generally making things look tauter and tighter.

The reason you want a matte bronzer is that it will simply look like natural shadowing. If you used a shimmer bronzer, the glittery particles would bounce around and catch everyone’s attention and the gig would so be up.

To look natural, you also need the right tool and technique. So buy a brush designed for this trick – say, M.A.C Small Contour Brush, $62, M.A.C – and whisk it over your bronzer. Sucking your cheeks in, place the bristles in the hollow of your cheeks, right next to your ear, then blend down towards your mouth. Stop approximately in line with the outer corner of your eyes – any farther in and you’ll go into obviously-faux territory. Now, blend so that you blur away any hard edges. And blend again. Then a little bit more!

Buy: Rimmel Sunshimmer Bronzing Compact Powder in Light Matte or Medium Matte, $15.95, pharmacies. Generally, you want a shade a couple of tones up from your natural skin colour, so there’s not too much contrast between darker and lighter.

So, Primpers, are you Team Matte or Team Shimmer?

Or do you prefer to buy something that’s somewhere in-between?

Kat x

I love to bronze and highligh. A little secret of mine is to use a fluffy eyeshadow brush for the tops of your cheek bones because it fits perfectly.

Kate Upton for me! So siren-y. I love a shimmer for summer and night time, but matte is totally more wearable for me if I am going to a function!

I like to use matte Bronzer then use illuminator on the high points of my face. I actually use MAC mineralize skinfinish powder in med/dark as a bronzer as I am quite fair and it does not have an orange tinge at all.

What can I say I like both, depends on mood and occasion for me on which one I want to wear.

A matte bonzer is sultry in looks and a shimmer bronzer is a little more feminine.
