Mummy-to-Be Makeup: Top Tips & Best Buys

One thing I keep wondering is, do you have to change your make-up whilst pregnant? To make sure none of the nasties in it make their way into your system? Or is that just being too pedantic?
Congratulations blossoming mum-to-be, you are about to embark on one of life’s most beautiful journeys.
While your wardrobe may have to undergo a major shape shift soon (hello, Lycra), the good news is your make-up routine won’t really need to change that much at all. Just look at Lee Watson – about to pop, and as gorgeously maquillaged as ever.
In saying that, during pregnancy it is advisable to err on the side of caution and avoid products that contain retinol/retinoids and salicylic acid. Mostly found in skincare products but may also pop up from time to time in treatment foundations and concealers, particularly anti-ageing or acne- and blemish-control formulas, so it’s best to check your current foundation stash for those ingredients.
Nonetheless it is amazing how growing this tiny, delicate being inside of us and all that sudden sense of newfound responsibility can often cause even the most die-hard cosmetic slaves amongst us (waves, hi there!) to suddenly become aware of what we are putting into and onto our bodies.
Between that and some of the many skin changes that may uncharacteristically arise depending on which hormone hand you get dealt; acne, dryness or suddenly easily-irritated skin means that many pregnant women gravitate towards gentler, more simple and natural products that may be free from fragrance, parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, talc and/or preservatives, thus reducing their chemical exposure.
If you fall into that category, now might be the ideal time in your life to experiment with mineral make-up. Quality mineral foundations are pure and gentle but also have an anti-inflammatory effect thanks to the high zinc content and could be just the ticket for sensitised or break-out hormonal skin.
Not overlooking mineral make-up’s amazing soft-focus, concealing factor and physical sun-protection ability that can work to disguise and further prevent pregnancy pigmentation while still being sheer, natural and glowy – we do want to amp that 1000 watt pregnancy glow all we can right?
