Makeup Tips for Thinner Lips!

Wed, 14 November 2012 4:52PM

My lips aren’t very full so lipstick doesn’t look great on me. Are there any tricks that will make my lips look larger?

Why, we’re glad you asked, because there most certainly are!

The first thing to know is that you should always go for lighter shades of lippie, as these don’t make a thinner lip seem so obviously volume-challenged, not to mention rather severe. With this in mind, follow that old beauty rule about sticking to one statement feature, and play up your eyes over your lips, which will keep everyone’s attention up north – again making smaller lips a non-issue.

But that’s not to say you can’t work some makeup magic on your mouth. Who doesn’t want a pretty pair of lips, after all!

Take Kate Hudson, for instance, whose lips are on the smaller side of things, yet still look luscious:

As you can see, a splash of shimmer on a nude lipstick (especially when concentrated in the centre of the mouth) visually makes lips appear plumper. You can also take a little highlighter or shimmer and trace it along the cupid’s bow – as Kate seems to have done here – which will also make your pout seem to pop forward. (It’s the same as when you highlight just above your cheekbone, to make them seem to jut out all the more).

Another trick – although this is a proceed-with-caution one – is to start off with a nude-hued lip liner, and trace it just on the outer edge of the lipline. This then serves as the base for your lipstick and shimmer.

Finally, you could brave a lip plumper. I’m saying ‘brave’ because these little critters work by stimulating (read: irritating) the tissue of the lips with ingredients such as cinnamon and menthol, giving a temporary swelling effect. You’ll feel an effect that’s anywhere between tingling and stinging. Some work, some don’t. Personally, I’ve seen results from Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker XL Extreme Plump, $24.95, Kit, which can be used on its own, or worn over lipstick.

Let’s hand it over to the other Primpers … does anyone else have any lip-boosting makeup tips to share?

I’m in the same boat but I’ve decided I don’t care anymore- I want to wear lipstick and I will.
But… I’d say a major tip is to keep lips moisturised as much as you can at all times, the drier they get the thinner they look.

Do you have any tips to make your mouth seem wider? I have a bit of a rose bud pout that’s just a little wider than the width of my nose.

i find what works best is if you use 2 different lipliners, one slightly darker than the other.. with the darker one, line the sides of the lips, with the lighter just the centre part, top with gloss!

I just bought the Maybelline “Baby Lips Glow” and it is fantastic! It fulfils my need for lipstick (which doesn’t suit me) and it is also a great moisturiser. It is the best lip balm alternative for lipstick and it is such a pretty colour (there are two options). I highly recommend it!!

another good tip is to line your cupids bow with a touch of highlighter (or something natural light Benefits high brow)
It helps to define lip :)

A lip plumper is a good way to go, I make my own as I cant find one that actually works very well, I get a standard little tub of lip balm or even paw paw ointment and add Cayenne Pepper to it, mix it with a cotton bud and apply to the lips, it stings a little but nothing painful and you end up with luscious looking full lips and the Cayenne pepper actually gives them a red tinge that looks really natural.
