So many parties to attend, so many makeup looks to try. The latest on our hit list is this minxy little look from Modern Family starlet Sarah Hyland. From the high tousled ponytail to the metallic smoky eye, there is so much to love here…
HAIR TIP: The key to creating a messy textured ponytail like Sarah’s here is all in the preparation. Begin by working some styling spray like David Babaii BOHO Beach Texturising Spray, $24.50, 1300 387 204, through dry hair and scrunch it in to achieve that slightly messy finish. If your hair is on the finer side, use your ghd IV styler, $239, ghd, and working in thick sections at the back and sides, create bendy, loose waves. Then, pull your hair up into a high ponytail and secure with a clear elastic. Pull a thin section of hair away from the ponytail and wrap it around the base so it conceals the elastic, and secure with a bobby pin. Pull the ponytail tightly to achieve the fountain-like effect.
EYE TIP: The smoky, dark violet gleaming eye is the focal point of Sarah’s makeup, and it’s not just because the purple shade is renowned for setting off gorgeous green peepers so beautifully. Start with your eye makeup before you begin working on your base so that you can clean up any fallout. Apply a wash of shimmering aubergine shadow, like Nars Cosmetics Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in Calabria, $39, Mecca Cosmetica, working it into the crease and up towards the brow bone, winging it out at the sides. Then go in and press a deeper charcoal grey shadow over the lid, blending it out at the wing and then lightly brush along the lower lash line. Pick a lighter violet shadow shade and soften the look slightly by brushing over the darker shadow on the lower lash line and in the inner V to open up the eye area. Finish with a few healthy coats of lengthening mascara.
SKIN TIP: Note how Sarah has opted for flawless, dewy skin, complementing her wet-look eye makeup. Using a moisture-enriched foundation (I love Laura Mercier’s Supreme Moisture Foundation, $59, Adore Beauty), and use your fingers to apply your foundation, beginning in the centre of your face and blending outwards, really moulding it into your skin. After you have applied concealer, whisk a little translucent powder on the t-zone to minimise shine, but try and keep your base as fresh as possible.
CHEEK TIP: Using your fingers, dab a cream blush on the apples of the cheeks, and blend it up in the direction of temples, towards your hairline. No harsh edges here, Primpers; you want to look as though it gradually disappears into the cheeks, leaving a pretty flush of colour.
LIP TIP: To achieve that slight pearlescent, peachy lip, use a lip brush to slick on your favourite creamy peach lipstick, then add a generous coat of shimmering gloss. We love L’Oréal Paris Miss Candy Glam Shine in Miss Candy, $22.95, from pharmacies. It’s a glossy fusion of silver and pale purple sparkling particles, and smoothes on softly without veering into sticky territory. In other words it’s perfect for party season, and adds a little extra dimension to your regular lipstick look.
