Party season has well and truly arrived, and as the heat goes up, so do our body temps ~in the club~. Going out in high summer can be a really sweaty experience, and we all know that bright lights, dancing, and cramped bars and clubs make for foundation that drips down your face.
I wanted to hear from an expert – how exactly can I keep my makeup looking fresh and, well, in the place I actually put it during the summer party season? And who knows more about makeup that will stick around no matter how hot the lights are or how pro your dance skills? DRAG QUEENS.
Have you watched RuPaul’s Drag Race? Or seen a drag queen performance live? I have done both and let me tell you there is NO down-time when it comes to drag. It’s all dancing, all action, and miraculously their makeup stays on throughout it all. I asked Kristina Crème, a cabaret drag queen from South Australia, for the 411 on long-lasting makeup.

Use high coverage makeup, but make sure it blends
High-coverage foundation is going to have the most long-lasting effect, but all too often people don’t blend. You’ve gotta blend! Otherwise melting makeup will be the least of your issues – you’ll have tell-tale lines around your jaw and a mask-like finish. “I like Kryolan TV paintsticks,” says Kristina. While these might be a bit TOO high coverage for your regular party look (Kryolan paintsticks are renowned for stage and television, but this is probably the highest coverage you can get), it’s WHY Kristina loves them that is most telling. “They give great coverage, but they’re also smooth to apply and have great blending ability”. When it comes to blending, use a buffing brush like Real Techniques Expert Face Brush to blur the edges of your foundation, and on any areas that don’t have a natural finish.
Let your makeup dry before moving on
If you’re working with matte lipstick, liquid eyeliner, or anything that goes on wet and dries – let it dry! Don’t try and multi-task and move on, you’ll either smudge it, or it won’t settle the way it’s designed to and you’ll get cracks, smudges or fading through the night. “I use Inglot’s eyeliner gel because it dries so well,” says Kristina. “I paint a bold black cat eye, so I need an eyeliner that’s not going to smudge or crack. This one stays put”.
Finishing products are a must
“As a drag queen of the cabaret, I perform under intense theatre lighting,” explains Kristina. “During production shows I’m out on stage several times within the hour, there’s quick costume changes, and headpieces that often slightly brush against my face”. Because of this rigorous and hot experience, Kristina swears by products with tested staying power. “I usually select products that are waterproof. But in general, the best rule is to always powder over your foundation, and use a light setting spray once your makeup is complete”.
Use creamy products for your face
Rather than go in with powder bronzer, blush and highlighter, you’ll get more longevity out of cream versions. “I actually use three different shades from the Kryolan paintstick range for contouring and highlighting,” explains Kristina. Cream products are less likely to rub or sweat off, especially if you set them with finishing powder once you’ve completed your makeup.
Don’t be afraid of colour!
Often we avoid brights when we know we’re having a big night out, because we’re terrified of how obvious they’ll be if they streak! But it’s all in picking the right products. “Inglot’s pure pigments are a favourite of mine,” says Kristina. “I love their staying powder and intense shimmer for highlighting and drawing extra focal attention to the eyes. I must shine on stage!”
The same goes for lips. “I love a deep red lip,” says Kristina. “NP Set’s Madrid is my favourite. It’s deep base is good for my skin tone, but the colour still exudes a brightness fit for stage and my vivacious personality. I also love Spain – especially Spanish men! So I feel like I’m getting a Spanish kiss every time I apply”.
