How to: Colour Your World With Crayons

I thought I’d be over it by now; the mood would pass like a lazy summer Sunday and the novelty would have worn off along with the tread of my Havaianas.
But no, my heart still belongs to lip crayons. As a matter of fact, my love for them has increased – rather than waned – this summer, as the colours continue to add a bold bolt of brazen pizzazz to an otherwise makeup-free face and their resistance to sun, surf and sangria never ceases to amaze.
Crayon curious? Here’s the why, what and when to wear of my favourite foray into lip colour:
The Benefits: Tie your hands behind your back, turn the lights off and answer only to ‘Blind Freddy’ – even then you could apply these suckers. For some reason that even N.A.S.A can’t come to terms with, crayon colour goes on right every time, without crawling into lip creases or straying over the lip line. I am a mad fan of slapping them on at a red light en-route to the office. By the time the lights go green, my kisser and me are good to go. Literally.
The Bonus: Many crayons come in a twist applicator, so that just when you think you’ve reached the end of the ruby red road, you take a small turn of the base to reveal even more of the good stuff. They don’t require sharpening either, which means you are not leaving colour to languish in the confines of the eraser.
The Boost: Lip crayons are crazy moisturising. Which is startling when compared to Crayola. Those things are nasty! But Revlon and Clinique all deserve serious kudos when it comes to non-chalky options. If you find that your lip crayon is at all drying, prep lips with a balm at least ten minutes before application to ensure your pout is perfectly moist but not greasy – the latter which can cause colour to slip.
The Behind-The-Scenes: So how do crayons conquer every lip need in one small product? Well although they are far removed from a typical lipstick – which contain pigments, oils, waxes and emollients – they definitely deliver colour just as successfully as any lipstick. However, this modern take on lip makeup leans more toward a balm in texture and feel. The two combined mean colour and comfort are no longer mutually exclusive.
The Best Bit: Lip crayons allow you to remain devil-may-care with colour. So budget savvy are they, you can chop and change colours daily – or hourly – and apply with or without a mirror at your will. Break the rules here and be bold and brave with colour sans self-consciousness.
The Deal Breaker: Although summer loves lip crayons, it’s not a two-way street. Excessive heat and humidity will cause the crayon to melt a little so keep them refrigerated alongside the aforementioned sangria for best results.
The Bright-Guide: Because lip crayons offer such bright shades, stick to some simple guidelines to get it right first go:
- If you have fair skin, opt for slightly apricots, nudes, pinks and light corals
- Medium skins work back beautifully with reds, magenta, berry, mauve, pinks and rose
- Dark skins are crying out for caramel or walnut shades. Try these for day and amp it up in the evening with a browner or grape tone
My other pick of the crayon kaleidoscope: Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Lip Stain in Sweetheart/Valentine, $17.95, Priceline
