My New Year’s Beauty Resolution: Up The Ante on the H2O

I have a confession to make: I don’t drink enough water. I know, I know, it’s one of the big beauty things all beauty eds rave about and as someone who prides myself on feeding my skin from the inside out, I, of all people, should be guzzling the stuff like it’s the elixir of life. Which, of course, it is.

I blame the lack of a good water bottle. Seriously. I’ve tried cups but the constant refilling requires too much time. And plastic bottles are incubators for germs and BPA poisoning. I’ve done the odd stint with metal but it tastes funny, and now, I’m getting cosy with a huge glass bottle.

Oh, who am I kidding? It’s not about the bottle. It’s me. I know I should be drinking 2-3 litres of water a day, but in reality, I only drink about 1-1.5. So, I’m not completely hopeless but I’m not as good as I should be either.  But all that’s about to change, Primpers. Two thousand and thirteen is the year I am going to pour H2O down my throat with as much zest as an in-season lemon. Here’s why: I know the importance now. REALLY know the importance.

Show of hands if you’ve ever been told you need to drink water. OK, has anyone ever explained WHY? I think this is the Achilles’ heel of water consumption. We’re all told to drink it, but rarely explained why it’s so important, making it slip a few notches down the priority list simply because it doesn’t seem all that important. So, I’ve done the research for you and am going to break down the barriers and fill the dam with knowledge. Here goes.

1. Why Drink Water? No Seriously, Why?

Two thirds of your body is made up of water, making it your ultimate allay in, well, living. Without it, you simply wouldn’t function.

Over a 24 hour period we you lose vast amounts of water due to sweat, peeing and lubrication of the joints and eyes, so it’s imperative you refill the tank to keep everything working efficiently. On an average day, the water floating around your body is used for:

  • Body maintenance
  • Digestion
  • Temperature regulation
  • Chemical reactions
  • Lubrication
  • Waste & Detoxifying
  • Growth

With so many jobs on the ‘to do’ list, it’s little wonder you need to keep your body well hydrated. The more hydrated your body, the better it functions. End of story.

2. How Much Is Enough?

Well, that really depends on the person. They say anywhere between 1.5 to 3 litres is ideal, but there are many factors to consider when figuring out your ideal number. For me, I know I need to drink more because I get thirsty, and while it’s easy to think that’s an obvious sign of dehydration, the truth is that your body is dehydrated long before your mouth tells you it needs a drink. So, here’s a rough outline of things to consider.

  • Food – I’ll talk more about this in a few points but much of the water you need comes from water-rich food. So, don’t think it’s all about the liquid stuff, fresh fruit and vege count, too.
  • Activity – Obviously if you’re actively exercising and sweating more than your average Joe then you’re going to up your water intake to replace lost fluids. What goes out, must get put back in.
  • Climate – Hotter climates require you to drink more fluids. So, if you live in tropical North Queensland you might need more than your mates in Tasmania.
  • Pregnant or Breastfeeding – It takes a lot to make (and feed) another human, so if you’re pregnant up the fluid intake to factor in your little one.
  • Age and Weight – As you age, cellular water loss is experienced, so the hydration needs of kids, adults and the elderly is totally different. The same can be said about people with varying weight.
  • Medications – Oddly, some medications require you to drink more or less water than usual. Ask your GP if you’re unsure.
As a general rule, I listen to my body. On days when it’s hot outside or I’ve exercised intensely, I have more. Some days, I have less. And others, I totally forget. You can actually have too much water, so I try to guzzle a few glasses when I wake up in the morning (and when you’re most dehydrated) and then taper off throughout the day and into the night. This is a great option for people who wake up to go the toilet throughout the eve.
3. Does It Matter What Kind Of Water You’re Drinking? 

In an ideal world we’d all have water filtration systems attached to every tap in sight and happily sip on clean water filled with essential salts and minerals. But that’s not always the case. If you can, choose water that is filtered, but that doesn’t always need to come from plastic bottle as they have their own demons going on. Tap water is OK if it’s clean where you live and in my opinion, it’s far better than soft drink. Or nothing at all.

4. I Want To Pimp My H2O. Help!

Not loving the taste of plain H2O? No probs. Up the hydration factor and health benefits by adding one, or all, of these additional pimperfiers…

  • Liquid chlorophyll – this green liquid can be squirted into your water to give it a minty fresh taste and loads of goodness. In essence, liquid chlorophyll is liquid oxygen, helping increase red blood cells, improve circulation, ease inflammation, oxygenate the body and protect you from free radicals. WIN!
  • Lemon – an instant way to alkalise your body, squeeze a little lemon in your water to kick start your metabolism and add a zingy fresh flavour to your H2O.
  • Himalayan rock salt – just done a massive workout? Ditch your sugary sports drink in favour of a tiny pinch of rock salt to help replace electrolytes in your body. Yep, the salt will help your body absorb the liquid more quickly.

5. What About Water-Rich Foods. Do They Count? 

You bet. Dr. Howard Murad has written an entire book on the subject of water and skin benefits. Called The Water Secret, Dr. Murad reveals that it’s not actually how much you drink that matters, it’s how much your body retains. He believes one of the best ways to hydrate your body is with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, which when eaten raw, provide your body with a whole lot more than just hydration. Think: antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and more. Bring on the fruit and vege, I say.

    I’ve recently (last couple of months) started drinking more water.
    I think the best way is to keep a bottle in the fridge (I use a life factory glass bottle that holds 650mls). I don’t know why but when I was using glasses I’d just forget. now its easy to know how much I’ve drunk and its becoming habit.
    I drink at least 3 bottles (morning, noon and afternoon) and that would be just under 2 litres.
    sometimes I drink 4 or 5 if I’ve been really busy or its really hot and I’ve been out.

    Everyone should check out BKR water bottles! They’re glass with a silocone cover and come in the most amazing colours which makes drinking water that much more fun! I get compliments on it all the time!

    Thanks so much yasemin for reminding me of the importance of drinking lots of water.
    Im going to go fill a jug with water right now and put it in the fridge and aim to drink that each day.

    WOAH you really don’t need to drink 3 litres of water a day! Seriously! There’s a formula you can find that tells you how much you need to drink based on your weight, I weight 50 kgs and need 1.5 litres a day. Drinking too much water isn’t brilliant for you either.

    I always drink a lot of water but over the party season I get so dehydrated as I just forget to drink! And all the dancing dehydrates me!

    i dont drink nearly enough water either.i know i should for my skin, health and well being but honestly, most of the time i’d rather be drinking coffee or diet coke… *the shame*

    I used to faint a lot when I was younger due to dehydration, so now I drink around 1.5 liters a day.
    I have found my lips are rarely dry, and my skin looks so much better.

    I have a glass bottle next to me at my desk and I would say it is about 1.5litres and I always drink at least two of them every day, so I dont think that I do too badly in the water stakes.

    I used to be terrible at drinking water but now it is all I drink basically! It is much more refreshing than anything else, and very good for you. If you need help drinking it, make sure yours is filtered and try adding fresh lemon slices for a little flavour. Cucumber slices and fresh mint is another option.

    I’m one of those people that takes a bottle of water everywhere with them. I would say that I drink closer to 3-4 litres a day. I’ve gotten so used to it that if I don’t drink at least 2 litres a day I get headaches.

    Tthere is nothing more refreshing than a cold glass of water. It also helps that Melbourne has the best tap water in the world (and I’ve travelled a fair bit so I’m confident in saying that, lol).

    I always drink heaps of water in summer, it’s winter when I get a bit slack. I find at the office if I drink a big glass of water for every caffeine drink, it helps me drink enough each day.

    I always have a large jug of lemon infused water in the fridge, It’s much easier to get your daily h2o when it tastes like lemon!
    I also drink a lot of coconut water, even when I haven’t been doing any physical exercise.

    I aim for about 2 litres of water a day and if really does make your skin glow! Helps keep you feeling full so you eat less and aids digestion too! Great article
