PRIMPED Poll: What’s Your Favourite Manicure/Pedicure Colour Combination for Summer?
Wed, 16 January 2013 2:10PM
Considering I paint my nails, oh, three to four times a week, there isn’t a time throughout the year when I’m not experimenting with different shades of polish. Even in the depths of winter; I can barely feel my fingers let alone paint them, but you’ll usually see a hint of colour peeping through my mittens and splash of colour on my toes.
So one of my big beauty questions is always: what lacquer combination to use on fingers and feet? First world problems, for sure.
Traditionally I try to save up the brighter colours for summer, for both hands and feet. For example, today on my fingernails I’m wearing one of my favourite shades – Mecca Cosmetica Nail Lacquer in Jocelyn, $22, Mecca Cosmetica, a canary yellow, while on my toes I slicked on Orly Nail Lacquer in Pixy Stix, $18.95, from selected salons, a pretty peachy pink. I look kind of like a Rainbow Paddlepop. But it’s fun and summery and totally works.
Anyhoo. The whole mani/pedi colour combo conundrum came to light after a spa experience with a girlfriend during the holidays. She has beautiful nails, and always, always wears a bright red on both her hands and toes. So festive and so ladylike at the same time.
Coincidentally, Amy Poehler did the same at the Golden Globes on Monday …
I was debating the merits of the Paddlepop approach against a slick of red, and in the spirit of research turned the tables to you to find out your favourite mani/pedi colour summer combination for a recent PRIMPED Poll.
And wouldn’t you know it, 11% of you were Team Amy, dipping your digits and toes into a beautiful bright red. I’m sure you look great but I must admit I’m not one for the matchy-matchy when it comes to nails.
In my beauty books, on both nails and makeup, matchy-matchy is said to work its magic better on a more tonal basis, even when it comes to fashion. Kind of like Jessica Alba did earlier this week with her tangerine lips paired creamy apricot gown.
Think pale pink fingertips and hot pink toes. Surprise, surprise … 37% of your votes were actually that; your pretty summer pair was a pale pink mani teamed with a bright pink pedi.
Snap! This is also one of my favourite colour combinations, and just so you know, Essie has got you covered on both fronts. For the perfect pale pink you can’t beat Essie Ballet Slippers worn with Off The Shoulder, a darker, candy-like variation for your toes, $18.95 each, Adore Beauty.
So, you’re probably wondering right about now what the most popular vote was … Well, 50% of you said that you wear a nude mani teamed with an orange pedicure. And I don’t blame you – it’s a really fresh pairing for a hot summer day. I’m currently lusting after this gorgeous creamy shade that Naomi Watts wore at the Golden Globes, which was Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Arm Candy, $16.95, Priceline.
But for your toes, orange is a seriously on-trend shade this season, so if I had to mention my numero uno pick it would be OPI Nail Lacquer in On The Same Paige, $19.95, from David Jones.
It’s the perfect Hermès orange. Equal parts eye-catchingly bright and just that little bit luxe, too, and always peeks out prettily from a pair of tan summer wedges. Slick on two coats and a layer of glossy top coat and you’re set.
For the mathematical types out there, you’d know by now that there’s still 2% of voters left who chose a black manicure teamed with cream tootsies. A little too wintery for my liking, however I do agree that there’s nothing more chic than short and neat black nails. Try the cult-classic Chanel Nail Lacquer in Black Satin, $39, 1300 CHANEL – a must-have for any nail wardrobe.
And as for a cream-coloured pedicure, IMO they’re seriously underrated. There’s nothing like the pop of a pretty cream polish against gorgeous faux summer glow on your legs and feet.
Tell me, Primpers, which of the votes were you?
Or do you have another favourite colour combo for your mani-pedi?
Do you ever wear matchy-matchy fingers and toes?
