How to: Three Ways to Create Christmas-Inspired Nail Art
Mon, 17 December 2012 5:35PM
With just over a week left until Christmas, it’s about the right time to start bringing out the decorative nail art, Primpers. Since Christmas is one of the only times of the year that some of us can get away with wearing nail art, I say let’s paint the town red (and green!).
We’ve got three festive designs on offer, all of the DIY variety, but all varying in difficulty and fiddly-ness factor.
1.The Christmas Tree
Who doesn’t love a Christmas tree nail art decoration? Here, follow my step-by-step guide to recreating it. While a little fiddly, it works beautifully as a feature nail, with your other nails painted a rich forest green, or even red.
Paint your base coat and then follow with your main colour. I slicked on Hello Darling Nail Lacquer in Hot Tamale, $20.95, Hello Darling. Wait for it to dry, at least 10-15 minutes.
Using Manicare Glam Nails Nail Art Pen in Emerald Green, $9.95, Priceline, draw the outline of a Christmas tree using short, quick brushstrokes. Then colour in the tree.
Working quickly, grab your Hello Darling Rock Candy in Gilded Ristretto, $24.95, and, using tweezers, place singular balls on the tree to act as mini decorations. For the star, add a small dollop of red polish at the top of your tree, and drop three gold balls at the top. Press in gently so they stay put. Here’s the finished product:
2. Candy Cane
Despite the fact that you may look like a mad Sydney Swans (or St George Dragons) football supporter, candy cane nails are one fabulous way to decorate your nails for Christmas.
Slick on a layer of base coat and then add a coat of white nail polish – I love Orly Nail Lacquer in Dayglow, $18.95, 1300 769 355. Wait at least 10-15 minutes for your polish to dry.
If you’re wanting to do a little DIY, follow my How-to guide to striped nails, placing your Scotch Tape on a diagonal rather than vertically. However, using a nail art pen, provided you can find one the right colour, also works a treat. I used Sally Hansen’s Nail Art Pen in Red, $12.95, Priceline, and drew the candy cane lines, then filled them in. Wait for it to dry, then add top coat.
3. White Christmas
If you’re dreaming of a white Christmas like I am – what I wouldn’t give to be NYC – I don’t need to tell you how much we love Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips, $14.95, Priceline. Just in time for Christmas, there are five different designs, from sparkling glitter-effect (Shiny New Year) to monochrome checks (Checkin’ It Twice), and each kit comes with 16 nail polish strips, a mini cuticle stick and application instructions. My favourite design, however, is Snow Way!, a glistening pearly base with intricate ice blue snowflakes. While it does look beautiful as a full set, I love this as a feature nail.
Tell me, Primpers, what are you painting your nails this Christmas?
