How to: Carry Off Gel Nails

For the first time in a long time, I haven’t changed my nails every three (okay, two days). And as hard as it is to admit, it’s quite a different and rather lovely experience, thanks to a shiny new set of Bio Sculpture Gel nails:
As you know, I like to experiment with nail colours and nail art, which is why I had originally decided that gels, shellac and the like weren’t really for me. However, after trying a Bio Sculpture Gel manicure late last week, I caught up with Talya Bergmann, the Marketing and Operations Manager for Bio Sculpture Gel, where we talked all things gels, along with how – and when – to wear them. And let me tell you, Primpers, my mind was changed.
If you’re considering gel nails (or simply looking for the latest in celebrity nail inspiration) check out this advice before you make your next mani appointment:
THE BEST CANDIDATE FOR GELS
“It all depends on how long you can handle wearing them,” explains Talya. “Nails are such a fashion statement so if you’re somebody who likes having a beautiful manicure, then they are a great option. With Bio Sculpture Gel, like skincare, we determine the best gel nail products for your particular nail type and we use product accordingly, so they suit and feel comfortable on your natural nail. On shorter nails, you should get up to four weeks of wear time, but any longer you might not be able to handle the re-growth. But we also do apply them on longer nails, and we can also help you to grow your nails if that is one of your aims. The options are endless!”
“What sets Bio Sculpture Gel apart from other gel products is the fact that we don’t use any bonders or primers to adhere the gel to the nails. The idea is to keep the nails underneath the gel super-healthy, so we use a Vitamin Dose and Cuticle Oil, $17.35, to ensure that the nail bed and cuticles are kept in excellent condition without any dehydration or damage done to the nails,” says Talya.
“The key to creating beautiful gel nails is all in the preparation work,” explains Talya. In other words, Primpers, it’s always important to care for your nails, especially your cuticles, not only because they feed the nail, but also because overgrown and unhealthy cuticles can cause your gels to lift. “As I mentioned, your gel nails can last up to four weeks, but once you get them removed, you’ll then receive a whole new set of gels. There are no in-fills, because once you remove them we like to treat and re-condition the nails before putting them back on.” Primpers, you can actually have a long-term relationship with these gels and continue to get them applied month after month without any damage done to your tips. Good one!
COLOUR CHOICE AND NAIL ART
Bio Sculpture Gel nails are perfect for special occasions, like weddings, balls and the like because they provide a gorgeous, chip-free finish. With 180 shades in the collection, you can also mix colours to achieve your desired finish. Better still, Talya explains you can also experiment with nail art and textures, too. “We can do a variety of textures and finishes with Bio Sculpture Gel. All you need to do is choose your base colour and then we have everything from sequins to beads and feathers – even snakeskin – that we can apply to the nail, then cover with a special sealer gel to hold the design in place. However, if you are getting tired of your colour or texture, you can simply paint over it using another nail polish, and it will dry in seconds. But be careful when it comes time to remove them – only use a non-acetone based remover, as otherwise it could potentially ruin your gels,” advises Talya.
WHAT NOT TO DO
Like all nail polishes and gels, it’s best not to pick, or peel off the polish. Bio Sculpture Gel is a chip-free formula, so if you do happen to notice any lifting, all of the colour should slide straight off. “We do have a special gel remover which does contain acetone, but then we apply essential oils to combat any dehydration. Removal is similar to other gel nails; all you need to do is use a nail file to score the top of the nail which helps to make the gel porous. Then, dip a small piece of cotton wool the size of your nail into remover, wrap your nail in aluminium foil for 10 minutes and it should come straight off.
