Top 10 Iconic Hair Looks of the Decade

2011 is Brad Ngata Hair Direction’s tenth anniversary and I wanted to mark this milestone in our company by throwing a really cool event for our clients and partners. Over the past decade we have amassed a loyal following and really the celebration is for them – without the support of my clients I wouldn’t still be in business!
So on Saturday 8th October, we opened the doors of The Standard in Surry Hills, a cool New York loft style venue, with guests greeted by bar staff (styled in my signature Ray Bans and bowtie) to have drinks on us to celebrate. The whole room was styled with metallic ‘10’ balloons and a 6x4m projection screen looping a showreel of my work over the years – it was very Warhol’s Factory.
I re-created an iconic moment from a Hair Expo performance with the help of burlesque dancers, Michael Boyd and Ame Delves, but the night was all about music and I was honoured to have Sneaky Sound System as my special guests, who flew straight from a gig in Melbourne to perform for an hour. We also had an amazing line-up of DJs including The Faders and Marc Thilbault (after Sneaky played, I hit the decks myself to play my favourite 80’s electronica) and one of my old staff members treated us to her rock chick band, Cooper Read, who played Gaga covers for us.
Ten years is an amazing thing to celebrate with my team and of course the love of my life, Glenn Chaplin, the powerhouse of our company. Dreams really do come true!
So let’s look back on the past decade of hair and see who’s worthy of a mention in my Top 10 Iconic Hair Looks:
The beginning of the tone-on-tone colour trend that Beyonce rocked out when she went solo
J-Lo showed Latin American sass by doing tonal block colour in chocolate and caramel. Her ever changing styling brought back high octane glamour
Angelina – one word. HOT.
Victoria Beckham sparked a global trend, bringing back the graduated bob – coined the ‘Pob’
Nicole Richie made the boho deluxe hairstyle a fave for the beauty and fashion crowd
Kim Kardashian is famous for her big butt and her locks. She inspired the big blowout and is the sex kitten of reality TV
Lady Gaga – the hair god made avant-garde mainstream
What’s your favourite hair looks for the decade?
