Nicole Richie goes brunette. Saw that one coming.

It’s quite a dark, chocolatey brunette, and I have to be honest and say that I’m not convinced it’s the most flattering hair colour on Miss NICOLE RICHIE. But what would I know. (Besides everything.) What’s fun is seeing how over the past few months she has gradually shifted from Cali girl blonde to Alaskan lady brunette. (Too harsh?)

Here’s Miss RICHIE around four months ago, doing that long blonde hair with extensions and a fringe that she has become a little bit famous for. I don’t mind this colour on her, akshually.

And then, a month later, here she is doing what I class as a Total Hair Win: The extensions are out, the fringe has gone, the length is chic, the colour is very naturally highlighted, almost as though she hasn’t coloured it at all, actually, it’s just like that. But as you can see from that dark blonde/light brown base, she has begun her voyage to the dark side. (Less about cults and sacrificial lambs; more about hair dye.)

Cut to another month or so, and she’s added a lot more low-lights, and grown that fringe out completely and popped those ‘stensions back in. She has also apparently located a time machine, because this hairstyle looks suspiciously like the hair she had in Simple Life days, circa 2005. I’m not a fan. (And those eyebrows, Jebus RICHIE! Fill them in, please!)

Finally, we’re in the present, (well, yesterday to be precise) and here is Miss RICHIE sporting her favourite fringe, her most bestest-most-loved extensions and a deep mahogany brunette. She looks cute, and kind of…. bookish, but I personally think it’s washing out her skin tone. I am pleased however to see she has filled in her eyebrows to compensate for the new hair shade. Great Job, NIC.

Look, she can actually get away with all of them, but I think she looks “best” (that is to say, the look is most flattering on her eyes and skin tone) when she is a mix of golden, caramel, blonde and browns all mixed up together in a kind of hair tone mojito.

Ultimately though, my biased opinion aside, it’s awesome that she mixes things up, tries new things. She could happily sit in her Hippie Headband Blonde Hair Icon chair and let the world pass by, but she doesn’t. She gets out of that chair and into the salon chair, and for that I commend her.

(Still think she should go back to that lovely shoulder-length, sunkissed-golden-caramel-blonde, though.)

Which NICOLE do you prefer?
Do you think the brunette washes her out?
Fringe or no fringe?

She needs more blush and more depth in her lip colour.

It’s not her, somehow. Insipid really – go the caramel mix.

she’s recovering from pneumonia so that prob doesn’t help the washed out-ness!

I think it’s nice for winter – in my experience, my dark colours always seem a bit too harsh to begin with but after quite a few washes they meld (well, fade) into a nicer hue. I do prefer a sunnier Nicole though!

Second photo down is probably the winner. I just HATE women getting lowlights but having lighter bits at the front around the face. blerrghh.

No way, she looks 1000 times better as a brunette. I think the blonde washes her out. It’s too close to her skin colour, it’s like a giant pile of beige. The chocolatey brown gives her face more definition and makes her skin look clearer.

I like the last one best, but I’m weird like that. Also, that poll on the front page of Primped? The majority voted brunette.

I like the brunette and the mixed blonde & brunette. Not a huge fan of the blonde

I probably prefer the blonde but she can totes pull off the brown… AS LONG AS SHE HAS A FRINGE! Sooo cute! And without a fringe her hair looks kinda dirty and ‘stuck down’ to her head

I agree with Han. I think she simply needs to adjust her makeup. I think the dark hair really works for her. I think Nicole is adorable. Love her!

Can I first take a second to say that I LOVE your blog- by far the wittiest and most useful beauty blog out there! Secondly, I love Nicole with a fringe- she is like me in that she has quite a high forehead, so we need a fringe to balance this or we end up looking to ‘heady’!! I think I prefer her in the first picture, but that said, I like the fact that she chops and changes a bit. That long bob she had for a while with the fringe was great.

I actually disagree for probably the first time ever. I really like the brunette look – she looks elegant and the dark circles under her eyes aren’t as obvious. She looks healthy and natural.

I think she looks her best as a brunette. That colour is really elegant on her.

Hahaha love this commentary on Nicole’s hair transformation

I think that her hair looks much fuller as a brunette. But it needs some highlights.
