Kaley Cuoco Shows How Not to Wear Your Hair When you Have Regrowth

Thu, 14 March 2013 12:56PM

I don’t mean to sound rude, although I probably will … But please hold your comment fire because I mean this in the nicest possible way: Kaley needs to think about calling her colourist. In the not-too-distant future.

You see, when you decide to become a not-so-natural blonde, you need to not only commit to being the butt of the occasional blonde joke*, but also to getting your colour topped up every two months. At least.

Or else, not wearing your hair in a centre-parted, slicked-down style (refer to above) that will show all and sundry that your highlights have long grown past the natural-look stage.

Sure, balayage is back in all its two-toned glory.

But, in the crazy smoke & mirrors world that is our beloved beauty world, there’s good regrowth. And then there’s the real kind.

Not that I can really talk. I am so skilled in avoiding my colourist that I’ve been known to get calls from her, wondering if I’m still on this earth (*touching wood*).

Thing is, I’ve learned a few nifty, roots-minimising tips over the years. Some of which would be:

  • Go less straight with the partline. A severe line makes regrowth delineation appear all the more obvious. A zig-zaggy one, on the other hand, throws the focus off, and simply makes the crown area look like a more natural blend of colours.
  • Fluff up your style, so that it doesn’t sit flat on your crown. Again, to make that delineation between real and faux colour seem less extreme. A rough dry always does that trick for me; you can also hang your head upside down as you dry, which encourages a bigger hair effect. See how much more forgiving on the old partline Kaley’s style is here:

  • Get thee a dry shampoo. I find that when I use my trusty Klorane, the darkness of my regrowth softens. It’s also a Godsend on greasy, second-day-hair mornings, as you can massage it into the crown to boost hair back up to the fluffy look you had the day before.
  • Having said that, cleaner hair looks less dark (and therefore less two-tone-y), so if you can wash every day, do it. And yep, it’s fine to suds-up the strands daily – you just need to make sure you’re using the right shampoo/conditioner for your hair type.

Tell me, Primpers, how do you manage your regrowth?

Do you have your colourist on speed-dial – or do they stalk you a little, too?

Kat x

* There’s actually one good thing about this whole blonde joke business, for we blondes. “I’m just having a blonde moment” has become quite the legitimate excuse for any of my ditzy bouts. That combined with “Oh, baby brain” are quite the powerful get-out-of-jail cards. So keep those jokes coming, honestly.

I like her hair so much better in the second picture anyway, but I agree with you- if you’re going to commit to a colour change, you’ve got to be able to keep up with your roots (or find some ways to hide them, like you’ve suggested).

Cue a bitchy comment, but… can we just talk about her eyebrows for a second? Is it just me or do they have a real “tadpole” shape to them in the first picture? In the second they’re not so noticeable, but in the first picture it’s like they’re in neon and there’s a hand-drawn arrow pointing straight towards them.

OMG, regrowth is the bane of my existence! I dye my hair black and I guess luckily for me, my regrowth is dark brown (with a few greys sneaking in!!! grrrr)
And I agree with Jessielyn, what’s going on with her eyebrows?????

I am a bottle blonde and I religously do my re-growth every 4 weeks, and I dont mind doing it. MY hair is a lot darker than hers at the re-growth, I think she can nearly pull it off.

I third jessielyn and DeStarDesigns… I love Kaley, she’s a very good actress, funny, clever, not to mention beautiful, but those eyebrows… I wonder about it every time I watch BBT. The best ep is the one where Penny becomes addicted to online gaming. One of my favourite saying is ‘Yea I’m more Penny then Sheldon, no idea what you’re talking about’

    * blonde joke 2 cents… Standing in line at priceline the two girls behind the counter, who were not blonde, were teasing each saying how ‘blonde’ as in dumb, the other was. I stood there highly amused, waiting to pay for my fudge violet blonde shampoo. As I paid I said try this it’s really good for blondes! they didn’t get it….

she’s so pretty if only she’d dye more regularly

How nice is the name kaley :)

Im a natural dark brown so when I tried to go blonde the regrowth was just to difficult so now I just stick to brown dyes.
I love kaleys volumous waves, her hair looks so much nicer compared to the slick and straight. Truly inspirational.

I like her hair in the second picture,
I used to have my hair blonde but ended up going brown instead as it was a lot of work and money.

I don’t think kaley looks that bad, i’ve definately seen worse re-growth… I have the absolute best hair dresser, the woman is a miracle maker, and it’s a rare thing to find :)

    Regrowth is the worst hassle!

I went blonde when my dark hair decided to go grey at a fairly early age, and now I hide (or try to) my regrowth with a touch up of eye shadow, on my hair not my eyes! There are heaps of colours to mix and match, and I also ‘zig-zag’ my parting.
You can also buy things made for the job, a sort of crayon.

I really don’t belong in this section because I colour my hair purely to cover the grey. But my tip for those emergency days when the ‘sparkly’ ones are showing through and I don’t have time to get them seen to is to apply dark eyeshadow with a big brush down both sides of my part.

Ah, this is one of the reasons I can’t be bothered dyeing my hair. But I can’t get past her eyebrows. Ick.

  • Posted by: melanie // Sat, 16 March 2013 08:53pm

Amen to Jessielyn! I have always noticed her ill shaped eye brows! She is so pretty but those eyebrows! Noooo!

Her eyebrows take me away from her regrowth lol

Topknots, ponytails, headbands and, when really desperate, hats are my go-to fixes for regrowth. Topknots are the best. People think I’m amazingly creative instead of broke and needing a colour.

I get my partner to dye my hair for me, he actually does a really great job at it too!

  • Posted by: lovetoplay Master Fan // Tue, 19 March 2013 12:04pm

I don’t get regrowth as I don’t colour my hair. I do love the colour of Kaley’s re-growth over her yellowy-burnt looking colour! She should go natural I reckon!

I tint it my hairdresser just doesn’t GET it that after all these years I have greys/whites that can’t be bleached every 2 weeks so I ask for a root colour I can keep up & foils that aren’t so crazy close look blocky, as the base makes up the secondary tone .

My Miss 22 is a hairdresser so she helps me out….I find that one i have a bit of regrowth it helps if i put some highlights through and Miss 22 does such a great job that it looks very wonderful.

Her regrowth isn’t that bad as her natural hair colour isn’t too dark.
    I’ve seen much worse!

I like her hair in both pics….definately not a bad look.

If ever re-growth becomes a trend then I’m gunna be bang on style. Hold the boo’s, cause I kinda like it , well in the second pic anyway!!

When my regrowth starts coming through it is time for touch ups or re dying.
I like Kaley’s hair anyway it comes.

  • Posted by: debbie // Mon, 3 February 2014 09:58am

I bet she is pregnant to have that much re-growth.

  • Posted by: talkalot Master Fan // Thu, 8 May 2014 08:47pm

Regrowth is no big deal for me, as long as the regrowth is not grey.

  • Posted by: Ashley // Fri, 9 January 2015 07:37am

Wash your dyed hair everyday??? Wow, that statement discredited you completely. No one should be washing their hair everyday especially people that have dyed their hair, since a little bit of the color is always washed away. Plus dyed hair is drier and more prone to breakage so should not be washed everyday. Please don’t try to give people advice if you aren’t giving good advice.
