New York S/S ’13: How to … Get a Super-Sleek Up-Do, Inspired by Jeremy Scott

Fri, 14 September 2012 5:03PM

One of our favourite hair stylists ever, Wella’s Eugene Souleiman, was the man behind the manes at Jeremy Scott’s New York Fashion Week show. The inspiration: ‘ghetto fabulous’. That translated to a super-sleek up-do (all the better for fitting under the caps the models wore on the catwalk), into which was woven a long, slinky, six-strand braid.

Which might not translate so well into our everyday lives. But there is a great take-home tip we want to share with you. And it’s how to get an up-do that’s a fabulously sleek as this one.

Here’s what you do:

  • Wash and condition hair, then spritz Wella Professional Perfect Setting Blow Dry Lotion onto the roots.
  • With a flat brush, blow-dry hair away from the face and up from the nape, to create a base for your gravity-defying ‘do.

Now here comes the interesting bit …

  • Section out a circle of hair on your crown and secure into a ponytail right atop your head.
  • Now take the front section of hair and brush up into the air, misting with hairspray and smoothing out all flyaways as you go. Right about now you’ll need someone to hold this ponytail for you.
  • Because now you go to the back section of hair, and repeat the same process, smoothing and brushing hair skywards.
  • Next you want to join all sections of hair so that the middle one – the ponytail – is snuggled in the middle. Tie them all together.
  • The reason you go in three sections – as opposed to pulling all your hair up at once – is that you get greater control and a sleeker finish by woking with smaller sections.
  • Smooth the surface of hair by spritzing some hairspray on an old toothbrush and running it all over. Gloss it up with Wella Professionals Shimmer Delight Shine Spray.
  • Now it’s time to finish off your up-do. Here you can go any way you choose – whether a loose twist (and a textured bun would contrast nicely with the sleek, shiny base) or a tightly knotted, chic chignon.

What do you think, Primpers? Clever, isn’t it?
