How to: Golden Globes 2013: Old-Hollywood Waves

Mon, 14 January 2013 3:39PM

When it comes to The Golden Globes’ winning hair looks, there were bouncy blow-outs, sweet donut buns and romantic, rippling waves, but if we had to pick the trend we want to try for ourselves right now, it would have to be old-Hollywood glamour. Think Veronica Lake: a side-parted style, with curvaceous waves cascading down seductively over one eye.

Some of our faves:

Jennifer Lopez

Megan Fox

Nicole Richie

It’s not surprising this was such a strong look, really – who better to get Hollywood hair right than celebrities themselves?

Who, of course, have stylists on speed-dial… The good news for the rest of us is that it is possible to lure out that inner Veronica Lake, even in the comfort of your own bathroom.

Here’s how …

  • Starting with freshly washed hair, spray in a styling product that gives both volume and hold, focusing on the root area. Try Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep, $44.95, selected salons.
  • With your hairdryer set to high heat, flip your head over and blast hair to about 70%-dry.
  • Clip hair into about four horizontal sections. Beginning with the bottom tier, use a large round brush, paired with your hairdryer, to smooth hair out. Make sure to slightly angle the hairdryer nozzle down towards the brush, as this will keep the keep the cuticles flat, and prevent flyaways.
  • Continue as above, moving up through the sections, until hair is 100%-dry and reasonably smooth. Pay special attention when working on the hair at the roots (your ends will be tamed with the heat of the tongs).
  • Now that all your hair is dry, use a tail comb to create a neat side part. How far you take it to the side is completely up to you, although keep in mind that the deeper the part, the more Old-Hollywood your look will be.
  • Once again, take horizontal sections across the back of the head, this time approximately five centimetres in width. Fire up a large curling tong, such as BaByliss PRO Ceramic 32mm Curling Iron, $84.95, i-glamour. Now break the section into three or four smaller sections, depending on the thickness of your hair. Holding the tongs downwards, open and wrap hair (starting from a few centimetres away from the roots) around the barrel in a spiral form. Close clamp and hold here for about 40 seconds.
  • Continue with this technique throughout all sections. Once you get to the top sections, start wrapping hair around tongs from around cheekbone level. This is so as to ensure you keep the hair at the crown smooth.
  • Once all hair has been tonged, mist a medium-hold hairspray all over – try TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Finishing Spray, $7.99, pharmacies – to secure the style without weighing it down.
  • To finish off the look, take a bristle brush – I love Mason Pearson Handy Bristle and Nylon Mix (Medium), $155, Adore Beauty – and lightly work through the ends, until the curls merge to form an s-bend look, as you can see perfectly in the photo of Nicole Richie above.
  • Optional extra: As seen on J.Lo, slicking back the smaller side of hair makes for a polished look. Simply use any kind of clip you like (even simple bobby pins), grip hair back into place, then give a once-over with hairspray.

What do you think, Primpers? Do you love Old-Hollywood hair, too?

Ready to lure out your inner Veronica Lake?

haha….Well…When I was in my teens there was a guy at work that used to sit and stare at me and he always said that it just drove him crazy because he couldnt work out how i reminded him off and then one day he yelled out “Ive got it”…everyone jumped and then he announced that he had worked out who i looked like…Veronica Lake. I was so disappointed because i had no idea who she was so had no idea what she looked like. Years later when i worked out how to use the internet it was one of the first things that i did to google Veronica Lake . I used to wear my hair just like her when i was in my teens :)
