Your Guide To Perfect Nails

I’m addicted to manicures and pedicures. Not because I have a brilliant social life that requires me to sashay around with a champagne flute in my perfectly pampered hands. I’d addicted because it’s sometimes the only time I have to myself every fortnight.
Changing nappies and mopping floors is oh so much more glamorous with neatly painted fingernails too. Sometimes I catch a glimpse of my hand in the toaster as I wipe down the kitchen bench, and I’ll think to myself, ‘girl, you’re really rocking that plugged-in plum today’ {my current OPI colour obsession}.
I’ve managed to do the very hard yards for you and mastered the perfect {cheap} salon manicure and pedicure. Here are my tips so you too can be ever so glamorous:
• Pick A Good Salon
I know that seems to be a no brainer, but trust me I was visiting the wrong salon for a year, and I still cringe when I think back. Make sure your salon sterilises their utensils {not just dip them in a solution}, and that are conscious of being hygienic. Ask questions and look around. Bondi Nails on Bondi Rd, Bondi is a trusty worthy salon to visit.
• Bring Your Own Nail Polish
Each season I pick up one or two colours to add to my collection. Some salons sell OPI colours for as little as $13. Many salons water down their polishes which make them chip more easily than the full strength polish. It’s a cheeky way of getting you back there for more manicures.
• Ask For No Base Coat
I once got a head’s up from an inside source that the base coat can sometimes be watered down too, causing chipping and flaking. Skip the base coat or bring your own.
• Say No To Oil
There is nothing worse than walking out of the nail salon feeling like a battered sav. Say yes to moisturiser.
• Wait
Resist the temptation to snap up your keys and escape the salon when you’ve deemed your nails dry. The reality is that they probably need another ten minutes. So wait. It’s terribly unglamorous to change nappies with smudged nails.
• Shine
If you find you can’t resist the lure of You’re A Pisa Work {OPI Pinky Magenta} or any other colours in the salon, then keep a bottle of Sally Hansen Mega Shine at home. You can touch up your polish after a few days and get a longer lasting wear.

Fantastic article Chantelle! I agree with bringing your own np too :) A manicurist gave me a tip. If np smudges, dip your finger in nail polish remover and press it lightly against the smudged nail polish and it will desmudge it. I presume this is best done by the manicurist as it defeats the purpose of dipping your manicured finger into np remover to save another nail :P

I recently purchased Sally Hansen’s ‘Instant Nail Hardener’and although it does harden the nails, after the first day it flakes off the nail tips providing NO strength at al. I have tried the product several times just in case it was something I had done when I applied it but even with just out of the shower - dry nails, it still peeled offthe next morning. Has anyone has any success - becasue as it stands now I would not recommend this product to anyone.
Disappointed Kathleen

Sally Hansen Diamond Shine and Mega Shine are my must haves. Australia doesn’t have much of a Sally Hansen colour range, cept for on EBay of course…

Plugged in plum is gorgeous! This is all great advice, I always take my own colours to the salon. But if I don’t use base coat, my nails get so stained..

I have You’re A Pisa Work on my nails at the moment - makes me happy! But I would always always endorse the use of a base coat, especially if you go for a darker colour. Stained nails = ick.

After reading this I went and painted my toes and fingers in hope that it would inspired me to mop my floors.
