Melbourne Girl tells: The cutest new nail bar in Melbourne

Good things come in small packages. Like stuff from Tiffany’s, gift certificates from Belinda and the cute-as nail boutique, French Pink. Tucked inside Galleria arcade in Melbourne’s CBD, this pretty nail boutique seats only four at a time so you can’t help but feel spesh. I admit I’m picky when it comes to nails (and facials, and tans, and brows, and…) so trust me when I say that the manis and pedis here are very good. Excellent in fact – like, High Distinction good. And French Pink has just opened a new boutique in Albert Park at 113 Bridport Street (03 9696 5111) this February.
I know we’re all so busy our Outlook calendars look like games of Tetris but really we shouldn’t be handing over our fingers and toes to battery-hen style in-and-out nail bars. If you must, I can’t stress enough you do your homework first. Sounds obvious but make sure the place is clean – there are just way too many nail bars out there that have no clue on how bacteria can spread (clearly they didn’t grow up with a mum who followed them around with a bottle of Spray ‘n Wipe). Unclean tools, reused nail files and cuticle sticks (neither of which can be sterilised), and foot spas that haven’t been cleaned properly in, like, years (yikes), are just some of the nail crimes committed on a regular basis. Cutting living skin around fingernails is another (wince much?). And attacking hard skin on feet with a scalpel as some establishments do is likely to end in blood and tears (both yours) unless the girl holding the scalpel is a qualified podiatrist. Yep, it’s a battlefield out there.

At French Pink though it’s clear that “clean” is important to owner Kara Jeffers; the girl knows all about germs and how to kill ‘em so you don’t end up with an ick fungal infection. Every customer – no matter if she’s in for an express mani or the deluxe Oh La La pedicure – receives a free nail file and cuticle stick. (Neat, I need both of those.) And this morning, while my feet were soaking in one of the two custom-made pedi basins, I witnessed Kara pull on rubber gloves and actually Jiff the basin after the lady next to me had left. Nice work, but she won serious brownie points when she followed up with disinfectant spray on the basin and surrounding area. Don’t you love beauty people who genuinely care about their client’s welfare? I do.
Germ phobias aside (who me?), the other plus of this place is, of course, great nails. French Pink only do natural nails (so if you’re a fan of acrylics don’t waste the phone call) – quite frankly, they can’t stand the toxic fumes. Don’t blame them. My order of short, blunt and bright nails though, the girls oblige happily.
Book an appointment tout suite. (Ed’s note: Good one!)

I’ve been eyeing off French Pink for ages, as it is conveniently located next to the Medicare office. I plan on going there for my first ever (!!) pedi soon.

Awesome! Usually I’m a DIY kinda gal who prefers a simple natural or bright nail so this sounds perfect for my “every once in a blue moon pick me up pamper session” ! Can’t wait to check it out!

I’ll definitely head over to French Pink this weekend. Any top waxer you’d recommend in Melbourne?
