Gold Coast Girl - She loves her microdermabrasion, she does

The delightfully switched-on Gold Coast girl has the 411 on the GC, and like Melbourne Girl gets some kind of sick thrill from finding, trying and recommending makeup, beauty, salons and services all ‘round the G-Coast. Suits us, though, we couldn’t be happier to have the (former) blogger behind brightsidelover.com blogging for us, and helping us all look pretty when up north, and just being ace.
I got my first microdermabrasion the other day and I’m possibly a little bit in love. Or a lot in love. You choose.
Inspired by a friend who has been dermin’ it up (I’m so street right now) of late – whose skin is so glowy and shiny I can almost see my reflection in it – I trotted on down to my new favourite beauty therapist Joan Reynolds at Simply Irresistible Skin Clinic last week and asked her to work her magic. And that she did.
What I loved about Joan (and what any good therapist should provide as part of their service) is that she gave me a full rundown and a “tester” on my hand before going derm-crazy on my face. Maybe it’s just me, but I like to be talked through things and told the why’s, the hows and the whats before the ritual begins (Hairdresser Who I Choose Not to Name and Shame Here, I’m talkin’ to you! Oh and Eyebrow Lady Wielding the Oppressive Tint that was 1000 Shades Too Dark for Me, don’t think I’ve forgotten about you either. Grr!) So yes, it was nice to be kept in the loop rather than subsist as a mere pawn in a beautician’s game of “Let’s Fug Her Up!”
To give you a bit of background on microdermabrasion, essentially it is a non-invasive treatment commonly used for facial rejuvenation that removes the dead and damaged surface layer of skin cells to reveal healthier new skin cells underneath. The whole process is designed to stimulate the deeper dermal layer of skin to produce more collagen and elastin, giving the skin a younger, firmer, more supple appearance. On top of all this, it refines pores, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, controls pores, reduces age spots and pigmentation and does a whole host of other really wonderful things to make you look stupendously HOT. Not that you don’t already, but, you know what I mean.

With Joan at the helm, my microdermabrasion proceedings went something like this:
1) A lovely facial cleanse was performed. Mmm, facial cleanse.
2) A mini-vacuum cleaner thing was rubbed over my skin to ensure there was no dust before Grandma Annie came over to visit. See also: to increase circulation and encourage blood to the surface.
3) The setting on the machine was changed, and fine crystals were then sprayed across my face to slough off the top layer of the skin. This was relatively pain-free, except for a few areas (around my chin and near my cheekbones) which were a bit uncomfortable. But not overly so.
4) Then finally, the vacuum setting was switched back on and the crystals and skin were sucked away into the Never Never.
When Joan finished, I felt cleansed and pure, like the skin gods had finally absolved me of all my pore-clogging, frequent-face-fake-tanning sins. The result: super soft and silky skin (and an A+++ in Alliteration 101).
More to come on Joan and Simply Irresistible, but in the meantime, Gold Coast girls can find her located within Ultra Health Therapies, Level 3/34 High Street, SOUTHPORT or contact her on 0412154971.
Fresh-faced love forever,
Gold Coast Girl
Ed’s Note: Microdermabrasion may be less invasive than IPL or laser, yes, but is still a very strong treatment and is best suited to those with congestion and/or premature aging, not just someone looking for glow. Go easy on them, if you do enjoy some ‘derm, and limit yourself to four a year max. My advice, is if you are under 25, is that microdermabrasion is too strong for your skin. Use some gentle glycolic products peeling instead, like MD Formulations or Alpha-H, and get a similar glow.

I live on the GC and turned 30 last week. This treatment sounds like the perfect presant to myself. I have heard & seen horror stories of similar treatments going wrong. I have since been scared to let anyone touch my face with anything other then a few creams so thanks for the recommedation.
