For the Love of the Sun

It is the time of the year where people are more inclined to frolic in the beach, do more outdoor activities and fall asleep on the grass in the park. Yes, it is the time of the year we* all love. The heat, the warmth of the sun on our skin, bright sunny days and the extended sun light hours are what everyone looks forward to all year round.
But did you notice, every time you spend a day under the hot scorching sun, there seem to be more fine lines noticeable on the face and pigmentation/freckles growing in places you’ve never seen them before? This is simply because no amount of sun protection can truly protect you from the sun 100%.
The choice is very simple really, either choose to stay in the sun or choose to stay indoors. For me, I’ve always chosen the latter, and found myself constantly judged by my fellow Aussie mates who love having their lunch on the rooftop (hello! closer to the sun) and drinks outdoors (no thanks! there’s UVA/UVB rays). At the end of the day, it is your choice to have healthy undamaged skin or ageing, dry lobster skin.
If for whatever reason you cannot ditch the sun, do remember these tips to keep fine lines at bay:
1. Opt for spray mist toner in air conditioned areas to avoid further drying of the skin. Jurlique and L’Occitane both make good toner sprays. Rub your palm together to warm them up and gently press your palm all over face to help better absorb the mist into the skin. Use a tissue to pat off excess toner.
2. Stay hydrated. Carry a bottle of h2o with you everywhere you go.
3. Avoid having water sit on your skins surface as it will evaporate in harsh air conditioned areas.
4. Choose hydrating liquid foundation/tinted moisturiser over powder/cream foundation to avoid caking. As an added bonus, tinted moisturisers tend to have higher sun protection.
5. Skip this step if you’re sun burnt, but if you’re not, do a gentle scrub to slough off any dead skin cells before your usual skincare routine.
6. Don’t forget to use a refreshing serum, eye gel and gel cream after sun exposure. Choose water based skincare as oppose to oil based. Oil based products tend to lock the heat in the skin.
7. Use a hydrating mask after sun exposure. The faith of your skin lies in the hands of this hydrating mask step. Think of it as a crucial step to repair your damaged skin cells.
8. If fine lines are starting to become a more concerning issue, do consider moving to an anti-aging skincare routine.
9. Invest in fancy hat, cap or scarf (a la Audrey Hepburn in the picture below) to shield your face from sun. Think Hermes, Chanel. Fashionable and skin savvy, it is a win-win situation.
10. Find the biggest pair of sunnies you can score and keep them on.

* Except if you’re one of those owl-light creatures like me; we despise the sun and we hide from the sun.
