Does hot weather make you want to chuck your entire skincare and makeup routine? Me too.

Oh my God! Melbourne just had the most scorching week ever. It feels like we are in the middle of summer right now (and I’m pretty sure the rest of Australia feels the heat too). When all the magazine and beauty gurus tell us about switching our skincare and makeup products when the seasons change, they’re not just saying that to make us buy more stuff - they have a point.

The point is that your winter rich facial cream might not work on your skin during summer. The same thing applies for your body moisturisers, makeup, etc.

After much research and plenty of trial and error, I have found relief from the hot weather with these very clever products. One little tip from me to you:  If the product has an innovative spray version, buy it.

For the body:

Model Co – Skin Drink Airbrush Moisturiser
This one works especially well if you keep it in the refrigerator.  Keeps your skin well moisturised minus the thick’n’heavy greasy cream feel and it smells lovely too.

Dove – Cucumber and Green Tea Deodorant
It goes without saying, even if you are not a sweaty person, it’s always wise to keep your underarms clean and smelling fresh. You never know where you’ll go or when the office air conditioner can break down. (Ours broke down for two days last week!)

For the face:

Jurlique – Citrus Purifying Mist
Great to spray all over your face/neck throughout the day. It helps to rebalance oiliness and controlx shine on your face too. A must have if you have oily skin.

In additional, Evian and Avene do a pretty good facial spray that you can keep in the fridge for a refreshing kick throughout the hot summery day and night.

MD Skincare - Hydra-Pure® Oil-Free Moisturiser
For a facial moisturiser, the key words to look out for are: oil free, mattfying, shine control. MD Skincare by Dr.Gross has a fantastic Hydra-Pure® range that I cannot recommend enough. Pop by MECCA to check them out.

For Makeup:

Christian Dior – Airflash Spray Foundation
This spray foundation is famous for its airbrushed effect and making all that rubbing and foundation-piling onto the face unnecessary. The key is to keep it light and simple. Dab concealer on first and then a quick blast of foundation all over face and neck and you’re ready to go.
Another serious contender would be Napoleon Perdis’s Boudoir Mist Spray Foundation which I blogged about here not too long ago.

Other nifty products that are good to keep close by when the temperature rises:

1) Liquid Bud Eye Makeup Remover (Model Co)
To quickly remove any eye makeup smudges/melting disasters.
2) Facial Cloth Masks (SKII, SkinVital, Olay…)
After a day under the sun/heat, any facial cloth mask is a refreshing, soothing treat for the skin.
3) Purifying Mask (Dermalogica does a good one)
Keeps your skin from clogging thanks to all that sweat and dirt, plus it helps keep breakouts at bay.
4) Sunscreen
Reapply every 4 hours and don’t forget your hands, neck, etc.

I’ll leave you with a quick tip I picked up from a makeup guru in Asia (and a hot weather expert no less).

When the weather’s hot, take a clean facial towel, put it in a zip lock bag and keep it in the freezer. In the morning, use the cold dry tower (no water) and leave it on your face for a while before applying your makeup. This technique helps to close your pores and keep makeup in place longer.

You can also bring one to work (that’s if you have a freezer at work) and do the same thing during your lunch hour to refresh your skin/makeup, reduce shine during the mid day heat and to avoid three-thirthyistis. Brilliant idea isn’t it?

I hate this time of year so much, as someone with mediterranean heritage it means all my pores turn into enormous gunk filled black holes, my skin never feels fully clean and my sebum production goes into overload. :(

Akisa!! Have a hydrating mist near your desk and mist away every couple of hours. It’ll make your skin all dewy and glowy too. Avene/Evian does good ones too.

You can always replace your regular makeup with a high spf tinted moisturiser (hissy fit!) and it shouldn’t be a problem to reapply and dust some bronzer really quickly.

The trouble with working in an office is that I still have to keep my skincare fairly nourishing to combat the dry air in the office - all year round!  However have toned down makeup to bare minimum (not even eyeliner) due to a horrible spell of hayfever..

I’m always unsure about reapplying sunscreen over makeup throughout the day - am I rubbing off my makeup? rubbing it into my pores? Or just overthinking the issue?
