Being, uh, frugal, and intimidated by big, bright salons, I have not always been fussy about who cuts my hair. Throw in the confusion of tipping, and you have one big paralysing fear of hair salons. I know, I know—for shame! There are so many good hairdressers in New York. All the big names! Sally. Frédéric. Garren. Ted (Gibson). John (Barrett). And so on. But, as you know, those people charge $600 FOR A HAIRCUT. And they’re too busy cutting fringes for every chick in Hollywood, anyways. (But if you do want to splurge on the celeb-stylist experience, just make sure you book, oh, two years ago.)

When you head off an indulgent spa-kinda holiday, you don’t usually think of New York, do you? Those green-tea-drinkin’, steam-bath-loungin’ retreats tend to be in exotic places like Bali and the Maldives, or some quaint little village in the south of France. New York is more about competitive shopping, late-night bar hopping, and trying to ignore the stench of garbage lapping at the curb. However! We do have spas—lots of ’em. If you’re anything like me, the first thing you do upon entering a hotel room, even if majorly jet-lagged, is make a beeline for the bathroom to scope out the bath products. Maybe it’s their adorably wee size that I find so irresistible. Or the chance to try something new. Or, OK, let’s face it, it’s probably the idea of getting something for “free”.... more

Greetings from New York! My adopted city is the home of the famous Red Door, Kiehl’s, C.O. Bigelow, and more day spas than you can poke a pretty stick at. But one of my biggest NYC beauty thrills is a whole lot cheaper than the posh places: the drugstore. (And how much fun is it to say, “I’m just running out to the drugstore?” Lots. Makes sense, too: at drugstore prices, beauty is totes addictive.) ... more
