Hannah Asked:
Lately, Zoë’s been blogging about olive green metallic eye shadow. What is the best way to wear this new trend?
Answer:
Oh Hannah, you good little spotter, you. Yes, Zoë has been banging on about olive metallic eye shadow and it’s a super easy trend to try. Firstly, let’s take a peek at Jennifer Lopez, who was photographed recently at Scott Barnes' "About Face" Book Launch Party.
Doesn’t she look amazing? That skin! That voluminous, baliage hair! Those glossy nude lips! Oh, and look, she just happens to be wearing olive metallic eye shadow. How convenient.
This deep olive green shadow has a touch of shimmer and is perfect for creating a smouldering, smoky eye. Depending on how much you apply, the colour can be as subtle, or as heavy as you like.
To create this particular smoky eye, steer clear of any dark charcoal or black coloured shadows. They are too dark and if applied incorrectly, can leave you looking like you’ve been in a punch up. Reach for softer shades of greys, browns or gold, all of which will blend with the olive shadow nicely.
Outline your eyes by sweeping your chosen colour across the rim of your eyes, following the lash line and finishing slightly beyond the outer corner. Then, take an olive green shadow like Lancome Erica E eye shadow or Napoleon Perdis Loose Dust in Emerald, $24 and apply it to the entire lid, blending and smudging just past your crease. Blending is the key to a smoky eye, so don’t be lazy and skip this step.
Jennifer’s lower lashes have also been lined in olive coloured eyeliner. If you’re not brave enough to follow suit, line your bottom lashes with a lighter shade of eye shadow using a thin brush. This will open up your eyes and finish the look. Finally, apply a nude gloss, some bronzer and a coat of mascara.
Alternatively, if the olive smoky eye is too heavy for you, use olive coloured eyeliner on a nude eyelid for a fresh daytime look. Try Bobbi Brown Forest Shimmer Ink long-wear Gel Eyeliner, $45 or Estee Lauder’s Michael Kors Very Hollywood Eye Pencil in Sepia, $38. Just remember, this look is all about the eyes, so leave the bright lipstick for another time.
