Return to tennage skin i.e. nasty chin pimples (11 posts)

Hi everyone!

Hoping the lovely primpettes can help me! I usually have pretty decent skin, clear with the very ocassional pimple. Overhauled my skincare routine about three months ago as decided after turning 25 I needed to invest some more time and money and my skin has gone from bad to worse ( clearly should have stuck with my supermarket faves!)

I've developed quite sore, red bumps on either side of my mouth which will not clear, no matter what I do. Occasionally they develop a head (a very attractive pus filled one at that) but instead of clearing, they just kinda go back into the large red bump. I also have some very fetching, purple-ish marks (flat, no head) to really compliment the blind/red/sometimes pus filled pimples or whatevere the hell they are!

I've literally tried everything! Stopped new products and returned to a very basic cleanse, tone and moisturise routine. Tried the Ganier stop roller ball (that Zoe raves about), toothpaste, sudocreme EVERYTHING!! Nothing makes any difference, literally they just stay where they are, pretty much like i haven't even tried to clear them!

It's worth noting that I had s similar but much worse problem as a teen and was on roaccutane for a year. Went off the pill 6 months ago due to crazy person behaviour and hormones are all over the place!

I'm at my wits end and have made a dermatologist appointment for when I return from my OS trip but till then, am desperate!

  • try the dr lewinns medic stuff. i used to have shit skin and it has cleared my skin right up, magic stuff. their spot clear gel doesnt appear to do much on me, but the cleanser is lovely. have you tried dotting the area with plain tea tree oil also?? i find it much more effective than anything with salycilic acid (god i butchered the spelling of that one) or benzoic acid. but hey, if that doesnt work get the 2.5/5/10% benzioc acid cream stuff from pharmacies. its super strong pimple killing stuff, so you have to patch test first, and try the lowest strength first.

  • Last year my skin went berserk as well.Previously I had one or two then bam! my chin was like braille. I tried DDF sulfur mask and that controlled the outbreak and murad t-zone purifying gel is superb at busting zits.Best of all you can get a generous sample of the DDF mask at kit cosmetics and a sample of the gel at mecca-for free!Yay!.I found the gel worked better on larger pimples but the SA at mecca said she put it all over her face to prevent new pimples. The gel does sting a bit but it works so good.BTW on the package the instructions for the mask was once a week but I was so desperate, I wore it everyday for 1-2 hours and overnight for the pus filled pimples.Hope this helps!

  • Skin is a signpost to your general health - I had really awful big pimples only on my chin: turns out it was a hormonal thing brought on by a genetic diabetes related illness (hormones related to insulin related to glucose in teh blood) - sorted that out and the pimples went too.

  • Perhaps you should get a referral to a dermatologist.  That is the hormonal area for pimples though, have you changed pill or anything of that nature?

  • sorry, didn't notice the last line at first!   Have you tried stripping everything back and swapping to products with really basic ingredients in the mean time?   Almond oil makes a great cleanser & make up remover, massage is on your dry face then wipe off with a hot face washer.   Lush make an eye cream (Enchanted Eye Cream) that is VERY simple, about 7 ingredients and no fragrance.  I have used this as a face cream when my skin is really troubled. (I know it's smelly in Lush stores but under all that smell they have a few gems)   Once your face calms down, you can try re-introducing your products 1 at a time, this will usually help you find the culprit if the issue is product related but it does sound hormonal to me.

  • Oh my! reading that I felt like *I* had written it  - but I have found the answer! I found a local Dermalogica recommended salon because about a month ago I was absolutely at my wits end! My skin was worse than it ever had been before (I too, have had the occasional pimple before) and it was mostly concentrated on my chin, with more on my cheeks. The lovely lady I saw at InTherapy in Red Hill (Brissie girls, this place gets 5 bright shiny gold stars) told me that a similar thing had happened to her at 25 (I just had my 25th birthday) where somehow the hormones just go crazy, and cause you to break out like never before. Made especially worse if you are usually susceptible to breakouts. So... I went to InTherapy and she started giving me LED light therapy (red and blue) which we did for a few weeks to heal my skin (it's only $30 a session there) and last week we started Microdermabrasion - and after only a few days, I have really noticed a difference. I can't wait to see my skin after another 5 weeks of it! I notice you are going overseas, if you want to delay it until you are back I can recommend the products that the InTherapy ladies gave me, which have been great.Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel twice a day (double cleanse to clear makeup)Dermalogica Microfoliant once a day (this has oatmeal in it which made my skin itchy due to my gluten intolerance, so I can no longer use it, but it was seriously effective for exfoliating)Indio Rebuild Cream as well as Indio replenish serum or vitamin c serum daily (this stuff is not cheap, averaging $100 for products, and is only available in salon but is amazing - I'm sure there's probably a cheaper Dermalogica moisturiser that would be good too)I'm also using Indio Renew cream nightly, which is an AHA exfoliant type cream. I'm only using it a couple of times a week now that I'm getting the Microdermabrasion, but it is seriously effective. I hope that helps - I know how absolutely frustrating it is!! Good Luck :)

  • I forgot to mention that the Indio products - Replenish Serum and Rebuild moisturiser are specifically formulated for hormonal skin (it says for "menopausal symptoms" on the packaging, but InTherapy assure me it's good for all kinds of hormonal skin). x

  • I had fantastic skin all through high school but year 12 killed it.  I guess one can't get into uni and have great skin.  I'm in 4th year now and still having issues in exactly the same areas. Lately my skin's been looking heaps better. I've just been using good old Neutrogena - Deep Clean Cream Cleanser, Gentle Toner, and Moisturiser for day and the rapid clear gel on any spots and bumps under the skin (it brings them out but I figure that's better). The main thing that I think has been making a difference is I'm using a Vitamin E cream from the Chemist at Night which heals all the ouch.    Also it might sound silly but I've started doing a bit more exercise and that's probably helping too.

  • Im in EXACTLY the same boat.  for over a month now my skin has been a big red mountain range... and by god they hurt! I had a facial done at Ella Bache and it calmed my skin down a little but now its back to being sore and pimply again.  would love to find out how you go at the Dermatologists!
