How To: an All-Natural All-Aussie Tan (Sun Damage Not Included)

Tue, 22 January 2013 3:44PM

I love a safe tan. Anything that doesn’t involve part of our solar system or tanning bed light bulbs is good enough for me.

And so it must be for Lara Bingle, too, who always sports a beautiful, and natural-looking tan …

But I admit I glaze over when reading the ingredient list on the back of the bottle. I’d rather read the phone book – upside down – to be honest.

But if you are more diligent than me when it comes to getting your glow on; if you are a seeker of something more, something organic, something kind to you and the environment when it comes to tanning, then you are in luck. This summer sees a slew of options for organic loving girls such as yourself.

Far more shallow than that? Got ya. Sometimes the stench on the sheets can be just as much a turn off when it comes to choosing a faux tan, so you may also find that organic or chemical-lite options simply smell better.

I stumbled over my organic glow-to-go by accident. It just so happens that it gives me a totally natural and realistic radiance, and it’s vegan, cruelty-free and certified organic. I speak of Eco Tan Organic Invisible Tan, which uses cacao to tint the skin, smells grouse and goes on colourless so there is no evidence of your tan falsification left on sheets or sundresses.

Did I read the label? No. And I’ve never had an adverse reaction to any other tanners in my life. But now that I’ve found one that is lighter on the heavy, unhealthy stuff, I am going to check the fine print in future.

Eco Tan founder, Sonya Driver admits that it can be laborious dissecting labels, but she ensures that once you begin to recognise the names to avoid, it’s a much easier and faster process next time you’re shopping.

So props to you for choosing a sunless tan. Maybe you want to go one step further and give these local beauties a run?

  • Eco Tan Invisible Tan, $34.95, Eco Tan: is certified organic with a slight rosehip and chamomile scent.
  • Summer from Beauty Department, $34.95, Beauty Department: uses only naturally derived tanning agents without harsh chemicals. It contains no harsh synthetic colourants, parabens or propylene glycol.
  • Endota Tandota, $30, Endota Spa: is certified organic and contains aloe vera water to moisturize and DHA – a simple carbohydrate derived from plants – to create the tanned colour.
  • Pod Puraceuticals SPF15 Liquid Tan, $55, Pod Puraceuticals: the body-butter like formula not only provides a natural streak-free tan that develops in 3-5 hours, but it also contains broad-spectrum SPF 15.

I like Santorini Sun which is organic (but not certified). Non stinky which means no headache and it did what it promised- gave me a great natural looking colour.

I’d love to try ECO Tan but it’s so expensive :(

I have an Eco Tan, a bit different as it’s in a pump bottle. It’s quite nice and doesn’t have a strong “tan” smell. Not too orange either.

I don’t tan very often but it’s good for a hint of colour.

I have tried the new Montana Tan range that has come from the UK it is the best I have ever tried and I will keep spreading the word! If you want a real natural tan within 1 hour and can shower without it damaging your clothes or fading then this is the tan to buy.
1 HOUR and your a bronzed babe ‘gotta love a tan’

I’m not much of a tanner, preferring to stay pale, however in saying that I think a light splash of color can make a girl look a lil healthier. WIll have to look into these “more friendly” tanning options!

I love the St Tropez tanning moisteriser as I don’t like to look to dark.
All my friends work on their ‘natural’ tans while I try to avoid the sun at all costs and wear spf 30+ each day. They always tease me but I know in 10 years I will be the one laughing.
Lara Bingle is phenomenal! She should be so proud of her body!

I once used Santorini Sun, but after repeated uses found that it gave me a headache still :( Pity because it gives great colour!

Absolutely obsessed with Eco Tan- but I also love Aussie Bombshell. They’re great for different needs- AB gives a better colour (I think) and is an express tan, buuuuuut Eco Tan fades a lot better and a lot more evenly. Go Aussie brands!

I’m not a fan of the tan, I am instead a fan of looking natural but you’ve listed some great products for ladies who are interested in tanning.

I dont mind the scent of fake tan, its just once you start to sweat a little it doesnt smell as nice anymore. Lara looks like she’s lost some weight since her show.

I was at the beauticians and was told I had a lovely tan by the girl tinting my lashes, I think she was a little surprised when I told her it was le tan in a can! Done properly you really can get fantastic results from budget fake tans.
