A review: Hypoxi

If Naomi Campbell gets cellulite, it’s pretty safe to say that I’m going to get it too. Yes, I have a little on my ass, as do the majority of girls my age, but I know that as I sail past my 25 years and start nudging the 30 mark, I’m sure, despite my 4 times a week runs and regular toning sessions, all those early morning lattes and mid-afternoon chocolate chip cookies are going to come back and bite me on the ass. Literally. So, when I had the opportunity to test a machine that helps smooth my skin tone and help me lose a few centimeters off said ass and thighs, I of course jumped at the chance with as much enthusiasm as I reach for that Paddlepop after dinner.

Obviously in our line of work, Zo and I are inundated with products and treatments that claim to reduce cellulite, eliminate water retention and generally make us look 10 kg’s lighter after only one session or a weeks worth of application. Some of them come up trumps, others, well, they fall as flat as a Sunday morning pancake. Hypoxi however, is not one for making extreme claims and failing to deliver. And, with every 30 minute session you have to peddle your way to looking slimmer and smoother. None of this sitting around doing sweet F.A. business. You, like everyone else out there with smooth as skin and hot thighs, have to work for it.

WHAT IT IS: Hypoxi is a scientifically proven treatment that works to reduce cellulite and help with targeted fat loss. Translation: A body treatment where you’re strapped into an airtight chamber with bike peddles for around 30 minutes, in order to keep your blood flowing in the lower half of your body. The point? To target your ass, knees, thighs and stomach and help those areas loose weight and smooth out, rather than your boobs (which, let’s face it, are often the first things to go).

Here’s what it looks like:

And then, this...

The premise behind the treatment has much more to do with blood flow than anything else. Dr Norbert Egger, the dude who created Hypoxi realised in a moment of wisdom, that if you could stimulate blood flow to a specific area of the body, like your bum, thighs, stomach and so on, your fatty acids would metabolize faster in that area, making you loose weight and reduce cellulite more effectively. He also realised that exercise was key to speeding up the process, and set about creating the Hypoxi capsule that marries exercise (peddling) with his ingenious discovery.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

My first session was akin to seeing your personal trainer for the first time. You know, all the usual things like height, weight, uncomfortably standing around in your g-banger while the ridiculously hot and fit looking staff (who all clearly LOVE the machine and use it daily to look that good) whip out their measuring tape and jot down your digits. Humiliation over. Phew! Now, it’s time to shimmy into the chamber and get peddling for around 30-40 minutes while you smash a few ep’s of Sex and the City or read a mag.

While you are lying down and watching tele, it’s not easy, Primpers. It is exercise after all. But if you’re not one for busting your balls in a spin class or hitting the pavement, beading up a storm in 40 degree heat, I think Hypoxi would be awesome for you. You do sweat, don’t get me wrong, but not in that ‘I’m going to need a chamois to dry myself off’ type of way.

THE RULES:

Like with any treatment, there are some rules that you need to follow in order to get primo results. Rather than just average ones.

Firstly, Hypoxi recommends you take 12 sessions. This could be 2-a-week for 6 weeks or 3-a-week for 4 weeks. I would recommend going the 3-a-week option, you get much better results and because it’s in a shorter time frame, you’re less likely to lose motivation (something I am definitely prone to).

Secondly (and the HARDEST part for me also, Gold Coast Girl) was to have no alcohol or carbs for at least 4-6 hours after Hypoxi training. The rule about no exercise 4-6 hours after however, I found a breeze.

THE RESULTS:

When I started Hypoxi I was in that post Christmas shame period. I’d just returned from a 3-week all you can eat holiday to New York where my usual eat well, live well policy was lost somewhere between the Lower East Side and AA. I’d put on a few kg’s, nothing major but just not feeling 100%. I was sitting around about the 75% mark.

So, naturally, it came as a very, very pleasant surprise to me that after peddling away for 4 weeks for 30 minutes at a time, I’d lost 5.5 centimeters off my stomach, 3.5cm off my hips, 3.5cm off my contracted leg and a total of 22.5cm off my entire lower half. Ummm, hello HYPOXI, I think I love you.

As well as the numerical measurements, I also noticed a HUGE change in my skin tone. It was definitely smoother, more even, less bumpy.

Sometimes, with these kind of treatments, you finish and a few weeks later those lost kg’s seem to creep back onto your thighs. Annoying, I know. However, I stopped my Hypoxi sessions about 1 month ago and yes, I have been exercising and keeping fit, but the results are still there. Those kg’s haven’t crept back and that smoother skin is still, well, smooth.

Since finishing, I’ve sent both my housemate and my best friend there. And now, you. It does work. It isn’t a fad and I think you’ll be thrilled with the results. Just like me. And Gold Coast Girl, of course.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT !!! I I have speant over $1000 for these sessions. Yes I did loose some weight but have seen no noticeable difference to my celluite. I contribute the weight loss to my healthy eating combined with gym sessions on the off day
